My blog to ZIM file conversion is ongoing - it's a bit too manual right now but that's short term while I clear the backlog.
It's also given me time to reread early content and I'm quite surprised by the unintended prescience of some postings. For instance, my April Fool joke in 2016 about the UK Government bringing in a mandatory "Physical Key Escrow" in which home owners/occupiers are required to supply a physical copy of their dwelling door key to The Authorities.
Once I've done the migration I'll crack on with writing more - the dark nights and mornings are approaching and there'll be no excuse not to :)
Anyway .. https://petergarner.net/notes.php?thisnote=20160401-Physical+Key+Escrow+system.html

In an unusually serendipitous moment (or luck, maybe), I've found that my blog format is 99.5% compatible with the format I need to make a #Kiwix ZIM fille! Sometimes I surprise myself ...
Anyway, I've currently converted 1 blog post and have set up a download location on the web server. Please visit https://petergarner.net/ZIM/ and check out "Reservoir Dog". Please leave feedback here!

Spent a fascinating day yesterday creating a test #Kiwix ZIM to house what I hope will become a local community blog - The Skircoat Journal (West Yorkshire, UK). I help out at a local community library so i'm planning to do a writeup called "The Future is ... Offline"; maybe get some volunteers to contribute content. Later there are plans to start converting my blog posts to ZIM as well. Images in my blog are stored within the text as base64 strings for portability and I was delighted to see that Kiwix supports this. 🎉
Most of my time was spent finessing the CSS - my least favourite job - then it was many iterations with zimwriterfs and loading into tbe Kiwix app on Android phone and iPad mini for consistency checks. The Read Aloud on Android is amazing!
The only thing I'm not sure about is where to externally host these ZIMs - some would be local interest but more widely interesting and the blog ZIMs would be universally popular (I think). Any suggestions welcome!

So I've doing a bit of thinking, and think what I *really* need to do is set up a hyper-local info point for my immediate neighbours. This is partly driven by my tinkering nature but mainly in response to the UK's lack of public information in resilience in difficult times.
Right now I'm looking at repurposing a spare NUC, loading up a selection of #Kiwix content + **kiwix-serve** and putting up a high-gain WiFi antenna somewhere outside the house. If I'm clever I could run it using solar... This would enable neighbours to access useful content even if power's off, using their phones/tablets (obviously until *their* power runs out!)
It'd be entirely ZIM based and I can create personal ZIM files to act as bulletins.
I'd be grateful for any comments!

We've put extra effort to make Minecraft Wiki accessible offline. You can use ZIM file readers to browse Minecraft Wiki without Internet access, and yes, it means you can download Minecraft Wiki in one 1.9 GB file!
We recommend using @kiwix for best compatibility and usability. See https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Wiki:Offline_use for more information!

@viralobscurity @Em0nM4stodon Slightly off topic, apart of #wikipedia and #ifixit ,what are the files and datasets that you guys seed because you consider them as valuable for our global knowledge, culture, etc?
I never took the time to do it, and this #kiwix discussion reminded me to further help sharing such content ❤️
Of course this can edge with legality, but frankly I dont care anymore 😂
(BTW I realise that I haven't torrented anything for almost 10 years, and that it's time to do download again as well 😎)

Tiny Offline Tip to Access Knowledge! 📵📚
You can download local copies of some large knowledge databases, such as Wikipedia and iFitIt, to consult them later completely offline.
Benefits:
📵 You will keep access even if you don't have an internet connection or your connection is too slow.
🏛️ You will retain an archive in time, regardless of potential changes later on.
🔒 No tracking while you do your research.
Here's how! 👇

So I have bought an HDD IPv6 only tiny VPS from #Privex to use it as #NAS for me main VPS. I kinda feel guilty I told the support to revert SSD upgrade few minutes after she had done it...
I'm gonna seed torrents on me VPS. If you have spare bandwidth, I suggest you do it too. Whatever you like and benefits your community.
See Kiwix Library and FOSSTorrents for a list of torrents you could seed.

Alright. I am using spare bandwidth on me VPS to seed #FOSS torrents!
I have ordered 30GB of HDD space to move the files completely to it. Then I will be able to seed more.
I am interested in seeding various underrated #opensource softwares and games. This includes #BSD derivatives, other independent operating systems like #HaikuOS. As well as many open source games like SuperTuxKart, Wesnoth and Xonotic.
I also seed offline versions of Persian Wikipedia.
If you also have got some spare bandwidth and disk space, you can help other people.
https://fosstorrents.com/ They create Unofficial torrents for many open source projects. I am seeding some of their torrents. They also include many BSD derivatives and independent operating systems.
From #Kiwix library you can download offline versions of many popular websites such as #Wikipedia, #Stackoverflow and so on. You can seed Wikipedia on your own language.
Also many #Linux distros and BSD derivatives have official torrents.

📚 Kiwix JS 3.8.8 (Electron/PWA) is out! Read offline Wikipedia and thousands of other libraries, on Windows, Mac, Linux or in your browser.
New this time: downloading a big library (200MB+) is much faster in the desktop app thanks to built-in WebTorrent, and you can now pause and pick up where you left off. Mac and Windows versions are also fully signed now.
