  3. @viralobscurity @Em0nM4stodon Slightly off topic, apart of #wikipedia and #ifixit ,what are the files and datasets that you guys seed because you consider them as valuable for our global knowledge, culture, etc?

I never took the time to do it, and this #kiwix discussion reminded me to further help sharing such content ❤️

Of course this can edge with legality, but frankly I dont care anymore 😂

(BTW I realise that I haven't torrented anything for almost 10 years, and that it's time to do download again as well 😎)

  4. Tiny Offline Tip to Access Knowledge! 📵📚

You can download local copies of some large knowledge databases, such as Wikipedia and iFitIt, to consult them later completely offline.

    Benefits:

📵 You will keep access even if you don't have an internet connection or your connection is too slow.

🏛️ You will retain an archive in time, regardless of potential changes later on.

🔒 No tracking while you do your research.

  5. So I have bought an HDD IPv6 only tiny VPS from #Privex to use it as #NAS for me main VPS. I kinda feel guilty I told the support to revert SSD upgrade few minutes after she had done it...

I'm gonna seed torrents on me VPS. If you have spare bandwidth, I suggest you do it too. Whatever you like and benefits your community.

See Kiwix Library and FOSSTorrents for a list of torrents you could seed.

  6. TIL about Kiwix thanks to the Fediverse. I’ll use solutions like these someday when, either due to external forces or my own choice, I live in an internet-free home. get.kiwix.org

  7. 📚 Kiwix JS 3.8.8 (Electron/PWA) is out! Read offline Wikipedia and thousands of other libraries, on Windows, Mac, Linux or in your browser.

New this time: downloading a big library (200MB+) is much faster in the desktop app thanks to built-in WebTorrent, and you can now pause and pick up where you left off. Mac and Windows versions are also fully signed now.

  10. A service that views wikipedia offline, but also mirrors it with diffs whould be neat.

Kiwix is neat for viweing and downloading, but I don't know wether it does do this or not.

  11. Does anybody know a workflow for converting exported #MediaWiki XML (as produced by `Special:Export`) to a ZIM for use with #KiwiX?

I'm willing to write some Python code for this if needed but would be happier if there's some tool that lets me just drop in the XML and get a KiwiX-ready ZIM out. I'm not fussed about the aesthetics of the result.

  12. CW: UK politics

This is all the more relevant now that they’ve announced you’ll have to provide ID / face scans to to access sites like #YouTube or #Twitter in the #UK.

Good luck banning or controlling #RSS feeds and podcasts.

Also worth checking out #Kiwix if you haven’t yet.

  13. Wikipedia has a 'built-in' reverse video button which is excellent for reading in low light (i.e. non-office) conditions.
Is it possible to achieve a similar effect whilst browsing ZIMs with Kiwix?

  14. @internetarchive If preserving knowledge is important to their mission, have librarians met the #Kiwix project yet? @kiwix

  15. @kbsez
It's been murdered by some greedy cunts like everything else that was once good about the Internet.
I suggest that everyone downloads the entire database while they still can before it's forever corrupted with corporate and political lies and AI garbage.

  16. @iFixit direct apk download is my preferred store. Also, Accrescent would work. Or, you know, just a zim archive in #kiwix would be even better

  17. @zekjur
The cool thing about kiwix is that u can jjst serve that even from ur phone and all those connected in ur wifi network can access it. Useful for libraries, classroom etc etc
U don't need internet all the time, only for updating. Pretty cool
