  1. @mkristensson

Completely aligned with your points in addition :

    * If you use passkeys you need to have a backup meaning in practice having 2 devices registered for every accounts
    * Free software implemented passkeys ( like #KeepassX ) are mostly unsupported by GAFAM

    Die is großartig!

  7. If you are looking for a good password manager you can use from anywhere, there are plenty of excellent options to choose from. However, if you prefer to only store your passwords locally, KeePassXC is what you need. In our latest tutorial, we'll walk through setting up KeePassXC to work with your YubiKey as an additional factor to secure your local-only password database.

  8. Given the recent blunder by Mozilla I decided to look into how easy it would be for me to remove their services as a dependence in my life.

Turns out, it only took around an hour!

  9. Fucking hell. Nightmare never ends. #LastPass #Hack #CyberSecurity

If you're using LastPass - it's time to migrate (now). #BitWarden #Dashlane #1Password or even #ProtonPass are all viable alternatives, that (so far) have ZERO incidents. Great for cloud-based alternatives. If you want to keep your password manager local, #KeePass or #KeepassX are fantastic as well.

  10. @jstevenyork , do you use a password manager, like #KeePassX or #KeePassXC? If not, it is probably good time to start using any. Don't type logins and passwords, just copy-paste them 😉

  11. How to use #KeePassXC or, how I think it should be:

I call this the paranoid-mode. (Good for corporations, and anyone with highly sensitive information/accounts.)

    1. One file for passwords only.
    2. One file for Passkeys.
    3. One file for TOTP.

    4. Each file is locked with (1) Password; (2) key file.
4b. You can also add a Challenge-Response if you have a YubiKey or OnlyKey.

    5. Never use the same password and key file for each of those files.

    6. Place the TOTP and Passkeys files on separate USBs. You generally only need one, not both.

    7. For your password file:
7a. Separate USB, useful if you have multiple USB slots.
7b. Or, if only one slot (for example, mobile devices), you can have a separate USB for both Password + TOTP; and Password + Passkey.

    ---

This mode is good for most users. (General user mode.)

    What most people actually do:
    1. One file for Passwords + TOTP + Passkeys.
    2. Password only. Or, Password + Key File.
    3. Stored in a cloud. Or, encrypted with Cryptomator before storing in the cloud. (The latter is not advisable as it might corrupt the KeePass file.)

    ---

You can combine options from paranoid-mode to the general user mode to increase security better without making it far too hard for your use case.

  12. So, I've been transfering my passwords manually to #KeepassXC for the past two days now, and during the process, I'm also changing my passwords and emails; and not transferring dead services. (As well as deleting them once transfered.)

I originally used #Keepass (the original), then #KeepassX. My #Android client of choice was #Keepass2Android. It worked pretty well together at that time, until the upgrade of the keepass database and Android, things started to get messy.

It was when I moved to #LastPass. After that service experienced a major(?) brand shake up, I moved to another service, this time with #e2ee (end-to-end #encryption).

Today, I'm going back to keepass because things are running smoothly again, especially with the Android integration. Both Keepass2Android and #KeepassDX have full support of KeepassXC and the latest features.

I just can't decide between Keepass2Android and KeepassDX. Regardless, I like them both combined with KeepassXC. The way I want things to be.

  13. @darkphotonstudio

#KeePassXC started as a fork of #KeePassX, which hadn't received any updates since 02/2016 and was officially abandoned in 2021.

The development of the original #Keepass by Dominik Reichl never stopped.

  14. @mk
Dunno about #KeePassX. The one I'm trying to use now (and have tried using several times in the past but it just didn't stick) is #KeePass and, although it works alright, it's a terrible UX for me.

I guess I got spoiled with #LastPass. It really was (mostly) good.

  15. I'm not a #security expert, just somewhat of a paranoid technical citizen & all the recent discussions around #LastPass got me wondering in what ways my set up could be vulnerable...

I've been using #KeepassXC / #Keepass / #KeepassX for ages now & added #Yubikey 's challenge-response mode (XC version) to it several years ago as well...

It's been kept in sync across a few personal devices via a cloud storage service which has #2fa enabled...

AFAIK this is "safe-enough" for my passwords right?

  16. I’m now a fan of #KeepassX on Linux / Strongbox on Mac. They are interoperable. I sync the vault directly peer-to-peer using Syncthing (Mobius Sync client on iOS). That keeps the vault off of other people’s servers. I have a NAS at home for backup that also runs Syncthing. 2/n

  17. I'm just glad I'm migrating to #bitwarden @bitwarden and #selfhosting with #vaultwarden server for a couple of months. #passwordmanager #password .

I'm maybe one of the oldest #keepass users around, I've been using it even before even there was #keepassx was around. I've been using it, but it's not a convenient way of a pw manager if you'd ask me in nowadays standards.

    #selfhosted

  18. @paul_ipv6 @adamshostack @alexlomas

They talk about the history here: 1password.community/discussion
and have a survey for #1Password support for self-hosted vaults: survey.1password.com/self-host

I can totally see why as part of a redesign/rewrite they'd have dropped some features, but this seems like a poor one to drop. I've been using #KeepassX for years (synced with #Unison, and with part of the key stored offline) and had been pondering migrating to 1Password until I heard about this change in v8.

  19. Don't let the LastPass breach dissuade you. Password mgrs are good, but if your data is in the "cloud" then its on someone else's computer. Control your data. Use your browser's PM or try the FOSS KeePassX.
