    🎬 German premiere: “1923 Kanto Massacre” 🎥

Tae-Yeong Kim, Gyu-Seog Choi, Korea 2024, 116 min., Japanese, Korean with English subtitles

On December 1st, we will be showing the German premiere of the film “1923 Kanto Massacre” as part of the closing event of our project A²BC - African and Asian Berlin Communities.

The film sheds light on the massacre of Koreans by the Japanese Empire after the Kantō earthquake of 1923. This harrowing story of colonial violence has long been kept secret and remains unresolved to this day - with deep wounds for the survivors and their descendants.

    🎟 Important:
Tickets for the film are available separately on the Sinema Transtopia website sinematranstopia.com/de/common but please also register at our closing event ➡️ docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI

  2. CW: Death, Mass murder

On this day in 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake and the subsequent Kanto Massacre occurred.
Now that discrimination, including xenophobia, continues and is especially intensifying, I think we must remember this day and reflect it in our actions so that we do not repeat such foolish acts.

    1923年の今日は関東大震災とそれに乗じた関東大虐殺があった日です。
    排外主義を含む差別が続き、特に強まってもいる今、愚行を繰り返さないように思い出して行動に反映させていかなきゃいけないと思います。

  3. On September 1, 1923, a massive earthquake struck the region including Tokyo, Japan.
Immediately after that, people who had come from present-day China and Korea, as well as those from rural areas, were massacred by spontaneous vigilantes in the affected areas.
The cause seems to be that rumors spread that they had looted or poisoned the wells, based on the previous discrimination against outsiders, and that newspapers and administrations also backed them up.

Currently, members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan, and Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, are claiming that this massacre did not happen, despite the existence of documents and testimonies.

In this eerie situation, today marks the 100th anniversary.

  4. CW: 関東大震災 Massacre
