I watched this Hungarian movie today, which I'd found on Kanopy a few weeks ago.
Directed by Béla Tarr, it was filmed in 1988, but shot in black and white with a set so stark, you might think it was filmed just after the war. Compelling in it's tug of war between hope and despair and it's protagonist's obsession with a woman he could never really have.
The first third of a trilogy the director is known for.

Last night I watched The Third Man, my first time having seen it.
The artwork on #Kanopy referred to a "stunning 4K restoration." The image looked fine on my 1080p-limited projector, but I tend to wonder if the version shown was actually an earlier transfer of the film. The mono audio track was hard to understand, extremely muddy, with exaggerated midrange that often vibrated the speakers — during *dialogue*!
Nonetheless, a great watch.

Daughter Rachel is visiting this weekend. She's a big fan of Hans Zimmer, soundtrack composer for Pirates of the Caribbean, Interstellar, Inception, the new Dune movies.
This 2.5 hour Zimmer concert is now on Kanopy, the free streaming service available in the US to most holders of a library card.
We ended up staying up late to watch the whole thing, highly recommended.

Watched a rather experimental movie with a vintage computer theme, called "Obex" via #Kanopy.
Interesting attempt, but the pacing and thin plot was literally putting me to sleep. Barely made it through, and now ready for bed. Whew, snoozy. Give that one a miss.

The modern history of African nations is, to say the least, clouded by those who seek to protect their perceived innocence and/or non-involvement. This film is a curative.
The Democratic Republic of Congo was a Belgian colony, then gained its independence, then was seen by western influences as important, and so was ‘soft-colonized,’ to coin a term.
Those in the Black Community, including Abby Lincoln and other jazz artists, were not having any of it. So they caused a disturbance in the UN General Assembly chamber.
This is the story of how that came to pass. It is complicated, but the events leading to its conclusion are nonetheless horrifying due to that complexity.
You won’t see Dulles, Eisenhower, or Khrushchev in the same way again.
