Coming up the Mackenzie River from the Peel's River Post to Fort Simpson, Robert Campbell's men traveled through Yee Fee -- that was the Indigenous name for the impressive Ramparts of the Mackenzie River. #NWT #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/ramparts/ -
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
When HBC clerk Alexander Anderson reached the place we know as Rhododendron Flats, on the Nicolum River east of Hope, he walked through the grove of wild flowers and picked a blossom, tucking it into his Latin Bible. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/rhododendron-flats/ -
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1851, Chief Trader Robert Campbell, of Fort Selkirk, on the #Yukon River, came to Fort Simpson on the Mackenzie River by a route that was new to the HBC men who lived on the Mackenzie. This new route would save Campbell much difficulty in getting in his supplies. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #NWT https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-simpson/ -

THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
Pierre Pambrun Jr. worked at Robert Campbell's Frances Lake post, and also at Pelly Banks. In 1850 or so, the Pelly Banks Post was consumed by a fire which destroyed all their provisions and warm clothes and also left them without ammunition in the middle of winter. It was a disaster in the making.... #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #Yukon #NorthernBC https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/pierre-pambrun-jr./ -

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
Sometimes stories come to you in little bits and pieces, and it is up to you to figure out how they fit into the story -- or even if they do fit into the story. These bits and pieces of stories are taken from things that were omitted from my book, and perhaps even stories that I learned later, after the book was published. #YorkFactoryExpress #HBCHistory #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/bits-and-pieces/ -

THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
Fort Yukon was built in 1845 on the lower Yukon River, while Robert Campbell built his Fort Selkirk a little later. In June, 1851, Robert Campbell and a few of his men set off to explore the Yukon and the Porcupine river, hoping to find their way east and south to Fort Simpson by that route and the Mackenzie River. It worked! But it did not save their post. #ThreeJourneysNorth #Journeys #Yukon #NWT https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/yukon-river/ -

THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In 1846, Alexander Anderson made his way up the Fraser River past the lake that the HBC men knew as Smess. Many Sto:lo people lived on this lake in houses that were built on stilts. Later settlers came and draining the lake, created farmland that now often floods when the river is high. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #SumasLake https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fur-traders-smess/ -

THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1847, Alexander Hunter Murray built Fort Yukon on the Yukon River at its junction with the Porcupine River. He kept an interesting journal that gives good information about the post, including its history. Eventually, the First Nations men confirmed that Fort Yukon was on the same river as Robert Campbell's Fort Selkirk. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #Yukon https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-yukon/ -

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
I thought it would be interesting to find and read Samuel Black's journals of his voyage down the Columbia River in 1825. However, it was written in pencil and because of its age, in part, it is impossible to read -- such a disappointment. Still, I gave it a try, but ended up telling other gentlemen's stories. #Journeys #YorkFactoryExpress #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/columbia-river/ -
