THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
On their way up the #Saskatchewan River, the men in the incoming York Factory Express worked hard to make their way up the river that flowed against them. In doing so, they told the stories of many of the old posts that once stood on the banks of this river. #Journeys #YorkFactoryExpress #SKHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/saskatchewan-river/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1847, HBC trader Alexander Hunter Murray built Fort #Yukon, on the Yukon River at its junction with the Porcupine. It was the first of two posts to be built on the Yukon River--Robert Campbell built his Fort Selkirk shortly after Murray built Fort Yukon. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-yukon/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1850, the steamer Beaver hit a submerged rock on the West side of Vancouver's Island, and damaged her keel badly enough that she had to be taken out of service. Interestingly, this accident seems to have been connected with the trade at Fort Selkirk on the #Yukon River, when some expected Indigenous men did not travel from the coast into the interior. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/accident-to-the-beaver/ -

In 1846, the artist Paul Kane began his journey west with the incoming #Saskatchewan Brigades and York Factory Express at Norway House. NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In 1847, both measles and dysentery arrived in the Columbia district, and spread everywhere, following the brigade trails North, and the seacoast all the way up to the #Yukon, via the massive Indigenous Rendezvous held every year on the Stikine River. The diseases killed thousands of Indigenous people. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/measles-and-dysentery/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
I have found this man in three of my stories: John O'Brien was at Fort Victoria for a short time, and also at Fort Durham, on the northwest coast. Then I found him in the stories of the York Factory Express--after which he must have been sent North to the Athabasca because I also found him there! He was a useless man, unfortunately. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NoOrdinaryRisks https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/john-obrien/ -

NO ORDINARY RISKS: THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA
In the Journal of Occurrences of the HBC's post, Fort Selkirk, we can read of the difficulties of keeping alive and well in a country so far from any other community that they must be completely self-sufficient--not an easy task in the North. #Journeys #NoOrdinaryRisks #Yukon #ThreeJourneysNorth https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-selkirk-post-journals/ -

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
The old post of Cumberland House stood for many years on the banks of the #Saskatchewan River, which led west to #Edmonton House. However, by heading North up the rivers that led in that direction from Cumberland House, the HBC men could also reach the Ile-a-la-Crosse Post and the Athabasca.
