  6. And, of course, our leading man is John Barrymore AKA “The Great Profile” of the legendary Barrymore Family Acting Dynasty. Like Carol Lombard he also passed away in 1942 but of cirrhosis and pneumonia complications.

  8. One of my favorite movies, Midnight (1939), is currently on the Criterion Channel.

It’s a fun take in the Cinderella story, with delightful performances by the legendary John Barrymore, a young Don Ameche, and academy award winning actress Claudette Colbert.

It’s absolutely worth a watch if you have access to it.

  15. State’s Attorney is a 1932 melodrama. John Barrymore is a hotshot lawyer who defends gangsters and a likeable streetwalker with whom he falls in love. There’s plenty of pre-code content. An enjoyable mix of courtroom drama, humour and romance.

  17. Mitchell Leisen's #Midnight (1939) is a delightful screwball comedy w/ a razor-sharp script by #BillyWilder and #CharlesBrackett.

But it must be said — #ClaudetteColbert has better, more genuine chemistry w/ #JohnBarrymore than with either of the handsome young men she's paired with (#DonAmeche and #FrancisLederer).

It's streaming on Criterion Channel. Watch it and let me know if you agree or disagree!

  19. “Twentieth Century” (1934) 2/4 - It’s got all the right elements, but the telling causes this #CaroleLombard and #JohnBarrymore prototype #screwball comedy to drag. The scenes with #Lombard and #Barrymore trying to out-theatre the other are insanely fun even if #Barrymore feels like he is more acting than ‘reacting’. From a writing standpoint, it’s interesting to stack against #Hecht, #MacArthur, and #Hawks’s better known film, “His Girlfriend Friday” (4/4), which never fails to dazzle.
