recap of the Java convention "JCON2026".
    TLDR: techbros.

They had 4 talks at a time, of which 1 is on the premium AI track for which you have to sacrifice your firstborn to Peter Thiel to enter (aka pay a higher priced ticket). Of the other 3 talks, 2 of them will glaze AI positively, leaving 1 talk that might actually be worth it to enter. The talk but might still include the mention of AI due to it the overlooming topic of the whole event. If you are lucky, the speaker is critical of AI. Kudos for Sharat Chander (
https://schedule.jcon.one/2026/session/1062742) who highlights the societal problems of AI and Brian Vermeer (https://schedule.jcon.one/2026/session/1061223) who memed about vibe coding due to the associated security problems it causes. If you are not so lucky, the speaker uses genAI imagery.
Things like "Java Rockstar" or whatever titles they give themselfes were used often. It felt elitist.

The folks at the convention were (who would have guessed) mostly old cis white males. I didn't clock a single queer or trans folk.

The companies there were mostly pro AI (who would have guessed) (
https://schedule.jcon.one/2026/exhibitors). It included Oracle (who would have guessed) which had some AI slogan and showcased their partnership with Red Bull in F1 (sportswashing 101). Another company showcased some blockchain NFT system for books and other works (their website showcasing a book with genAI cover and the market capitalization of some books). They were furious when I mentioned the idea of torrents.
A positive thing tho: I had a nice talk with an exhibitor of a company that didn't glaze AI. They were not aware of all the inequalities AI and big corpo cause and how to fight them. I felt like I had a positive impact on that!

I was there only on tuesday and a bit on wednesday, after which I couldn't stand it any longer. I hope the AI bubble bursts quickly so conventions are not
bought sponsored by these companies anymore. #java, #jcon, #jcon2026
