  1. My pick for this week's #SaturdayOnStage is a rare 1966 live performance by one of the all-time deep soul greats:

    James Carr: Love Attack (1966)

This clip was taped in Dallas for the final episode of "The !!!! Beat" TV show, but for some reason it was not broadcast at the time. Otis Redding was the host of this episode, and the back up musicians on this video are actually his road band.

"Love Attack" was the first hit of James Carr's career, released on the Memphis-based Goldwax label.

I hadn’t heard of James Carr until this album, and I think I’ve been missing out. He’s definitely one of the greatest soul voices of all time and this album is the perfect show case for his range. The standout track for me is The Dark End of the Street which is spine tingling.

The 2003 re-release of this album after Carr’s death at the tragically young age of 58 has an extra 13 tracks which could have filled an album on their own.

    Truly excellent!
