Dass bei Nutzung eines #VPN gar keine potentiellen Vorratsdaten beim Internetanbieter mehr anfallen, weiß diese @Bundesregierung.
Sie weiß auch, dass umgekehrt kein Webseitenbetreiber Zugriffe aus einem VPN der eigentlichen IP dahinter zuordnen kann.
Die Bundesregierung will also letztlich eine Ausweispflicht für #VPN-Zugänge. Das ist das eigentliche Ziel.
Ich empfehle ein vertrauenswürdiges #VPN mit ausdrücklichem Fokus auf #Datenschutz, aber ohne Zugriffsmöglichkeiten für diese Feinde der Demokratie: #IVPN oder #Mullvad vertraue ich bereits jetzt mehr als deutschen Internetanbietern. Auch wenn ein VPN zusätzlich Geld kostet.

If you are looking for mainly privacy-focused #VPN providers right now, you won't find too many.
Try #IVPN @ivpn or #Mullvad @mullvadnet
Beware of "FREE!" VPNs, since they're surveillance traps.
Also, beware of the two dozen big conglomerates that are behind 100s of "different" brands. They may serve you better than others with bypassing geo-blocking, since they have 1000s of servers to play the constant, world-wide blocking game.
However, I would not trust them with preserving my privacy better than the two I mentioned above.

Zkoušel jsem jich už dost, ale IVPN mě baví hlavně tím, jak je poctivá a nemá za sebou žádný velký korporát. Klient je open-source, takže si člověk může zkontrolovat, co dělá (Linux, Windows, Mac, Android, iOS – všude stejná filozofie).
Soukromí tu není jen marketing – žádné logy, žádné sledování, mají i pravidelné nezávislé audity. DNS dotazy chodí přímo v tunelu, takže tvoje dotazy nečte Google, Cloudflare ani NextDNS. Mají vlastní AntiTracker – umí blokovat reklamy a trackery rovnou na úrovni DNS, a když chceš, můžeš si vybrat, jak moc agresivní filtr použiješ.
Líbí se mi taky jednoduché rozhraní – žádné zbytečné pop-upy, žádné vnucování funkcí. Navíc můžeš platit bitcoinem, monerem, nebo i anonymně v hotovosti (!)
Navíc registrace je úplně anonymní – IVPN ti jen vygeneruje unikátní ID, který si uložíš a přes něj se kdykoliv přihlásíš. Nemusíš zadávat ani e-mail, fakt nic. Ideální, pokud nechceš nikde zanechávat stopu.Mají i server v Praze a české služby fungují bez problémů. Není to nejlevnější VPN, ale člověk fakt platí za poctivou službu bez keců.
Za mě ideální volba pro každého, kdo to myslí s ochranou soukromí a blokováním reklam vážně. 👌

I think the one thing I am not happy concerning NixOS is the lack of a GUI VPN (not Flatpak).
I, know how to use the terminal, but I can repeat how to use it until I am blue in the face, and pass out, but that knowledge and wisdom will wash over the other person who needs it. They'll hear me, but forget the moment I walk out of the room. If it is not graphical, they're not learning it.

It was a hell of few weeks, first I have migrated all domains from #GoDaddy and then #proton upset me with its “political neutrality”, so I have evaluated my possibilities, VPN migrated to #ivpn, pass migrated to self-hosted #git (#gitolite3 ) with combination with Linux #pass (#PasswordStore) it has apps for mobile and browser integrations. And the emails I have migrated to #tuta (#tutamail). This happens when you piss your customers. #Privacy

Most #VPN "providers" actually belong to a few conglomerates that also run various "affiliate" programs, plus "VPN testing websites" that happen to recommend their own products:

Picking one depends on what you want to achieve.
E.g., if you want to bypass geoblocking for gaming etc., possibly requiring low latency, you'll probably be happier with one of the market leaders. They can rent and set up thousands of servers, with their respective IPs evading the blocks, for a while.
If you care about ethics and privacy, simply want to shift trust away from your ISP, and can live with being blocked because you've picked a VPN provider with a limited set of servers, the choice is essentially between #Mullvad @mullvadnet and #IVPN @ivpn.
Some people also count #ProtonVPN in here, but the diversification strategy of the company has led to some decisions that don't inspire trust in me.

Looks like the open-source application firewall Portmaster has been acquired by the VPN provider IVPN.
I have tried out Portmaster in the past, it worked quite well. It is GPL licensed and will hopefully stay that way. But in my experience, an acquisition of a widely used open-source tool usually leads to a non-foss license change down the line, let's hope that doesn't happen here... there are no indicators of that happening other than my own cynicism. But my cynicism has been well-fed over the last years by corporations acquiring and enshittifying previously open-source projects. Maybe IVPN is different, I know nothing about them.

Question for the #privacy folks: I had to buy an #apple #macbook (yes, please hold your pitchforks) to work, but I want to use it in the most private way I can, so I was taking some notes:
- I'll not use an apple ID, I'll just use a local account
- All apps will be installed using #brew or similar methods
- I'll not use any native Apple apps (Finder will be the only exception)
- I'll leave it connected 24/7 in a VPN (#mullvad or #ivpn)
- I'll try LuLu #firewallAny other tips? Please #boost

Over several months, I've been comparing the performance of my #VPN connection in single-hop mode vs. multi-hop (actually, dual-hop).
On really bad days, using a VPN in single-hop mode costs me about ¼ of #performance. In dual-hop mode, roughly ⅓. #Latency… well just don't ask.
I can live with that.
