There’s a Mercedes advertisement from the 80s that I absolutely love.
It says: “About the only thing as valuable as today’s Mercedes-Benz is yesterday’s Mercedes-Benz”. Those words describe everything about how some things are built to hold their value forever.It’s powerful, isn’t it?
The way music is consumed now, you’re almost expected to apologize for your old work.
When a new release drops, the algorithm feeds it to people for a week or two (if you’re lucky), and then it disappears, replaced by the next one. The previous single becomes old and not cool anymore.A few weeks ago I made a post on my Instagram: A fan had shared a story with my first synthwave track ever, Voyage, from 2012. He was travelling, on holiday somewhere. That track playing in the background of his moment, 14 years later.
A record made 5 or 10 or 20 years ago isn’t an old record. It belongs to a very specific moment of someone’s life. From then on that song is glued to that night, that place, that face, that feeling.
An emotion is recreated anew every time the play button is pressed.Everything moves fast now.
Washing machines used to last 30 years but now they last 3. Phones, clothes, pretty much everything.
There’s always something newer and always a reason to throw away what you had.
My motto is “piano piano, lo stile italiano” (slowly-slowly, the Italian way).I want what I create to carry its own weight when it meets the person who needs it. Like a 1984 Mercedes sitting in someone’s garage. Still perfect.
