Thinking of wishes for the New Year I find myself unable to participate in the usual hopeful sentiments that are the regular fair at such festive anniversaries.
I've only gotten used to saying good morning again without flinching and wishing a happy new year when looking at the horrible situation facing Jews and Arabs in this country seem so detached from reality that it's hypocritical.
Things are slowly getting better. The number of rocket barrages is low enough for me to get back to work in Tel-Aviv. But it is hard to envision a hopeful 2024, perhaps the level of violence will go down, if a second front will not open in the north and slowly the refugees will be able to start rebuilding their lives. But the dead will stay dead and the trauma of the 7.10 massacre and its aftermath will continue to dominate our psyche.
Perhaps I can wish for a year of healing and recovery. Though I wish I could also hope for reconciliation.
Tonight I will be drinking, but not to party, to forget.
