  1. It's hard to imagine how *dumb* supposedly intelligent people can be. How much is it costing to deal with floods, now and in the future + heatwaves + droughts?

  2. This is a little bit crazy:

    16th Dec (~5 days from winter-solstice)
    SE Normandy.

    Ref: The Bumblebee Conservation Trust:

    White-tailed bumblebee:
Queens emerge from hibernation in March and April.
    ...
This species can be seen - up to the end of August.

  3. Flooding continues in France. It's been ongoing now for ~18months. Previously the water tables and aquifers were worryingly low. Everything is now overflowing. The country is drenched.

The latest is particularly bad around the Rennes area.

  5. @davidho

    Here's the entire article.

NB a lot of it is about the problems of dealing with the bean-counter/pen-pushers and how they try to portray the problem.

    Also...
For those not aware... we're fortunate to have @rahmstorf here on the fedi. He is a specialist in this area.

" Lahore and its 13 million residents have now been choking for a week; the air quality index has passed the 1,000 mark repeatedly this month - anything above 300 is considered hazardous "

  7. Just one more broken weather record.

In the Vars region (south of France) the previous record for 1hr rainfall (2006) was broken with a ~17% increase, on the night of 24-25 Oct-24.

    * 119mm of rainfall in 1hr in Vidauban. *

  8. Well ... this is a first.

When a meteorologist starts crying, because he's *never seen anything like it before* and the consequences could be awful: "This is just horrific".

Mostly forgotten now, since a small fortune has been spent the world over, cleaning stone. This is 1960s Edinburgh (Tollcross) vs today. Hard to imagine how much coal smoke it would take, to permanently coat the stone to such a degree.

Main building still has traces of coal dust, but the building to the left-edge of the photo, shows what the stone probably looked like new.
