A long day ends with on time arrival of my later train into Lille Europe. Hotel is just across the road and in my room about 10mins after arrival in the station.
A long day but a good day. Bonne nuit!

So I didn’t see much of the eclipse but my favourite fact about solar eclipses is the following:
“in a total eclipse our Moon just perfectly covers the face of the Sun, a complete coincidence which happens because the Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon but also (and remarkably) approximately 400 times farther from Earth”
I can’t help but think the Gods like to toy with us.

For research purposes, I hightailed it from Euston to St Pancras taking the pedestrian route through the backstreets, just to see if I would have caught my original train.
11mins fast walking from Euston plaform to St Pancras entry ropes and yes I would have made it with 9mins to spare.
Fortune would have favoured the brave on this occasion

+8 arrival into London Euston (+68 total)
I had somehow planned to be under the English Channel at the maximum of the solar eclipse - you can never be too careful with your eyesight.
But circumstances now call for me to be in the undercroft at St Pancras. Maybe I’ll delay my arrival a little.

Nearing Milton Keynes and yes the fields are yellow but they’re mostly arable anyway.
There are some trees with dying leaves but I’m struck by how resilient the trees and hedgerows generally appear to be in face of the drought.

CW: Mention of alcohol consumption
Alcohol consumption on a train journey is directly correlated with mastodon posting volume.

The nice thing about adversity on a journey is that people start talking to each other.
Conversation quickly progresses though, and our shared circumstances quickly veered into statements of beliefs that you realise you don’t share.
A legal professional talking about the presumption of innocence - great. London in the 90s and driving freely around the city - ok. London today, ruined - bicycle lanes, LTNs - ugh mate!

Overheard a member of staff explaining our earlier breakdown to a passenger.
Apparently these new Evero trains from Holyhead to Euston have two engines and one shut down due to overheating. Probably weather related. It could only limp on unladen from Flint to Chester
It’s only 30c here. Hopefully tomorrow’s journey through France will go ok with temperatures forecast to be in the mid to high 30s.

CW: Alcohol
After some raised voices and bag throwing, calm is restored to the carriage.
A lady normally accommodated on this service was allowed to travel to Crewe but told she must disembark there. On arrival at Crewe, she initially refused to leave. Cue bad behaviour and her ultimate departure.
The very patient train crew then commence the drinks service. I ask for a G&T and I’m immediately served two.

TfW train to Chester. Platform change to pick up another Avanti West Coast train. All going well I should arrive in London Euston at 17:37 or 1 hour behind my original schedule.
That’s probably just enough time to make latest check-in time for my 18:34 Eurostar from St Pancras but I’m risk averse and I’ve paid €20 on the Eurostar app to move my reservation to the 20:04.
Glad I’m travelling first class as this train is packed.

Well isn’t this nice. 1hr20min into journey to London Euston. Just finished a lovely salmon en croute followed by Eton mess and we arrive at Flint.
I miss an announcement from the train manager and we sit at the station for 15mins.
And then: train cancelled, due to an “engine problem”.
So here’s the lovely view on Flint platform.

10:30am glass of wine with cheese and I’m still grumpy.
Irish Ferries provide paper cups for hot and cold drinks in Club Class and they were strewn on tables all across the lounge until staff hoovered them up for the third and final stage of their lifecycle.
The coffee cups had a blurb about recycled paper and lower environmental impact. Fantastic! /s.
This big ass ship should be using ceramic cups and glasses.

A free newspaper and plenty of time to try to find something worth reading in it. I turn a page to find this diesel head minor celebrity’s wisdom gracing a full page.
“The Government wants us all in electric or hybrid cars, but these are the same people who once told us diesel was the safe, clean option”
Blame the government. What a lazy self serving attitude.
A comedian you say? Yeah he’s hilarious.

The thing about not flying to save on carbon emissions is that if you travel from Ireland to continental Europe often enough you soon catch up on the damage of one flight.
Today’s route is exactly the same as the one I took in June with the exception of the final stop at Lille instead of Brussels.

Ferried Across
I took another ferry back from Holyhead to Dublin last night. The outbound journey was via Irish Ferries but I returned on the Stena Line. I left Holyhead at 22.15 and arrived at the Ferry Terminal at Dublin Port at 1.45am. I was a bit unsure what it would be like on such a late-night trip but the trip was uneventful. I’d had a very tiring day getting to Holyhead so I toyed with the idea of sitting in the bar and having a few drinks, but I thought better of that. Instead I found a quiet corner in one of the lounges where there was a bench seat, and managed to stretch out enough to get about an hour’s sleep.
I think quite a few passengers had booked cabins for the crossing. I didn’t think it was worth doing that for less than four hours aboard, but I will consider that next time I take a late-night ferry. There’s not much to see out of the window in the dark!
The disadvantage of being a foot passenger on these ferries is that you have to wait until all the people with vehicles have disembarked before getting a bus back to the terminal building, which adds about 30 minutes to the time. Anticipating the probability that I would be knackered topo fed up to try getting home by public transport with all my luggage in the early hours of the morning, I had booked a taxi to meet me at 1.45, the scheduled arrival time, but I didn’t actually meet the driver until after 2am. Sitll, I got home to Maynooth quickly and was tucked up in bed by 3am. I had to open all the windows as the house was very stuffy, but other than that all was well.
While I was staying in London I took a few trips by train here and there, most of them very shambolic. All the direct trains from London Paddington to Oxford were cancelled, so passengers had to get on very overcrowded trains that went through Oxford to other destinations. To get back to London I used a train to Marylebone which I didn’t know existed. It was slow, but got me back.
With these problems in mind I took an earlier train from Euston to Holyhead than I originally intended. I’m glad I decided that because even the earlier train was delayed by > 45 minutes leaving Euston. Worse, some other trains goint to Manchester and beyond were cancelled so passengers were advised to get on the train I was on and change at Crewe or Chester. The seat reservations weren’t working so the result was a very sweaty overcrowded train with standing room only, at least until Chester where many people got off. The uncomfortable journey made me break a 195-day blogging streak as I just couldn’t be bothered even when I got a seat. Instead I just relaxed and looked out of the window as we travelled along the coast of North Waves.
My train from Holyhead to London was delayed by over an hour as was the train back yesterday. The upshot of all that is that I get a 100% refund of the fare for the entire journey so it was effectively free (if you don’t count the cost of the stress and discomfort).
Anyway, this trip was my first experience of ferry+train to the UK and back. My summary of the experience is “Ferry Good, Train Bad”.

Wexford Bus transports us to Gorey and our daughter is waiting to take us the last few miles.
Nearly everything went to plan and there were no serious hiccups thankfully.
The Interrail app supplies some nice statistics. Unfortunately, it doesn’t cover the ferry.

The works seem to be for a new rail freight terminal. As far as I can tell, the old pedestrian shortcut is gone for good. Hopefully, a new pedestrian route is part of the redevelopment plans.
The sign about the works says they will be complete by the end of June 2024. I don’t think they will make that deadline.

On a Sunday, a taxi is the only reasonable option as the bus only runs Monday to Saturday.
Earlier in this thread, I remarked that the Irish Ferries SailRail page had good information. Unfortunately, it’s now a bit out-of-date. The walk to bus isn’t wheeled luggage friendly and it’s a 10 mins walk with no luggage

After a lovely morning in Cherbourg where a nerd like me decides to walk to the ferry terminal to see how feasible it would be with luggage.
Bad news - don’t attempt to walk from Cherbourg Ferry Terminal to Cherbourg Gare SNCF with wheeled luggage. If you’re fit and have a backpack allow at least 45mins. It took me 35mins with no luggage.
The main problem is the pedestrian short-cut is closed due to redevelopment works.

Arrival into Paris St Lazare at 18:01, 31 hours after leaving home in Gorey.
Taking it easy here too. Next train tomorrow lunchtime.
