38 years ago, American Navy USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian passenger plane going from Bandar Abbas to Dubai over the Persian Gulf.
During the time, US was involved in hostilities against Iranian Navy while protecting & supporting Saddam attacking Iranian tankers during the last year of the 8 years war between Iraq & Iran.
Vincennes was supposedly chasing 2 IRGC speed boats trying to attack Kuwait flagged Iraqi tankers & went deep inside Iranian territorial waters.
The captain of the ship claimed that they mistook the Airbus A300 for an Iranian F-14 tomcat (stationed in Bandar Abbas at the time) & saw it "take hostile maneuver" towards them & launched 2 Sea to Air missiles "in defensive actions".
The claim was discredited by the flight pattern & black box of the plane that showed that it was on the weekly flight path towards Dubai & and it was ascending when it was hit.
290 civilians onboard including 16 crew were killed after the attacks.
George Bush (senior) who was the VP of Reagan at the time said "I'll never apologize for the United States of America. Ever. I don't care what the facts are."
