Iran, Trump, and the Misapplied Label of Intelligence Failure

Donald Trump’s decision to appoint William J. Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence is not just controversial. It is another clear sign of the ongoing politicization of America’s national security apparatus.
Pulte is not an intelligence professional. He has no background in counterintelligence, national security operations, strategic analysis, the CIA, NSA, Pentagon, or the U.S. intelligence community. His profile is that of a businessman and political loyalist closely aligned with Trump.
Before this appointment, Trump had already placed him in March 2025 at the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), the federal body overseeing giants such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and supervising large parts of the U.S. mortgage system. During his tenure there, Pulte pushed for investigations into alleged real estate fraud involving figures widely seen as Trump’s political opponents, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. None of those allegations resulted in indictments.
This is not an isolated case. It reflects a broader pattern in which loyalty increasingly matters more than competence.
The same concerns surround the current leadership of the FBI. Kash Patel’s appointment alarmed many former intelligence and law enforcement officials because he is perceived less as an independent institutional figure and more as a political loyalist. For years, Patel publicly attacked the very institutions he is now supposed to lead, promoted narratives about a so-called “deep state,” and openly discussed the need to purge parts of the federal apparatus.
This is dangerous territory for any democracy.
Intelligence and law enforcement agencies can only function effectively when they are trusted to operate independently from political power. Once professional expertise is replaced by personal loyalty, institutions begin to weaken from within. Analysts become cautious, officials learn that careers depend on obedience rather than competence, and agencies risk turning into political instruments instead of guardians of national security.
For decades, the United States built one of the world’s most sophisticated intelligence systems precisely because its institutions were expected to serve the Constitution and the State — not a single political leader.
That principle now appears increasingly fragile.
At a time of growing geopolitical instability, war in Ukraine, rising Chinese and Russian assertiveness, cyber threats, and global strategic competition, weakening America’s security institutions from within may prove to be one of the most consequential mistakes of this era.

The Art of Pivoting - Techniques for Intelligence Analysts to Discover New Relationships in a Complex World
This open source book explores how intelligence and cyber-security analysts can uncover hidden links between threat actor infrastructure and ongoing investigations by pivoting on both classic and unconventional indicators — many of which are often overlooked. The material is grounded in empirical, field-tested strategies used in cyber-security, digital forensics, cyber threat intelligence, and intelligence analysis more broadly.
I released the first version of this book following the @firstdotorg CTI Conference 2025 in Berlin, where the initial idea for the project emerged.

“Tulsi Gabbard, the US director of national intelligence, has fired the two highest-ranking officials at the National Intelligence Council (NIC) just weeks after the council released an assessment that contradicted [the 47th POTUS’s] justification for using the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members without due process. … The two were fired because of their opposition to the [POTUS], Gabbard’s office said in an email on Wednesday, without offering examples.”

CW: NSA spies fired for NSFW work chat
100-plus spies fired after NSA internal chat board used for kinky sex talk
After the #NSA confirmed on state media it was “aware of posts that appear to show inappropriate discussions” by intelligence community employees and “investigations to address this misuse of government systems are ongoing,” Trump’s Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced over 100 people had been terminated.
Writer and activist Christopher Rufo, working with Hannah Grossman of conservative think-tank Manhattan Institute, said they obtained chat logs from “NSA’s secret transgender sex chatroom” on #Intelink and shared samples via X.
For the sake of journalistic scrutiny, El Reg pored over the logs, and what we’ve seen appears to be NSFW discussion of sex lives and preferences, the kind we reckon would be harmless among friends but career-limiting in plenty of professional settings.

For folks in the IC:
Remember that you took an oath to serve the American people and uphold the Constitution. That is where you loyalty lies, not to any one person. You know the IC runs on institutional knowledge, much of which is never written down. You can walk away. You'll know when the time is right, whatever time that is for you. You have unique skills and experience that make you an invaluable employee or entrepreneur, and you absolutely won't have to violate any of your lifelong obligations. You will be OK.
I know this, because eight years ago I walked away from the DoD/IC world, having flipped from blue to green in 2013, taking a substantial pay cut to land where I wanted to be (my salary is still less than what I was making in 2016). It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
If you're closer to retirement, you can follow long-established tradition and RIP. Hold on to that billet. Get those benefits. All that's really required of you is to breath the Government air.
For everyone else, remember that you cannot be legally compelled to cooperate with background investigations. The most they can expect is verification of employment, and that's HR's responsibility, not a supervisor's or co-worker's. If they're really insistent on interviewing you, they can get a subpoena.

Some take-aways from last week’s 2024 #IntelligenceCommunity #TechWeek:
- Difficulties in developing AI for #defense and #security seem similar to the difficulties in #healthcare (e.g., #dataManagement, public vs. private #funding).
- Should funding agencies prioritize #teamScience over individual PIs or labs?
- The Sci & Tech awards ceremony continued its rare fusion of inspiration and mystery.I'm happy to discuss the #ICpostdoc program with interested U.S. citizens.

How can your institution benefit from reframing #autism and #neurodiversity?
The #RAND corporation suggests that
1. Some traits (like #neurodivergence) can be so advantageous in certain industries that they are more like #qualifications than #disabilities.
2. Some #accommodations (like stimulus-reduced spaces and times) are so universally beneficial that they should be the default rather an exception to #policy. -

Wait. What? Now they're saying it's *not* Little Green Men. I'm soooooo dissapointed. Since childhood, my life's ambition has been to be abducted by aliens. It wouldn't be research in advance of their invasion fleet's arrival. It'd be a rescue mission. I want off this rock. It's a death trap.

There has been quite some conversation around this lately. My take: Large Language Models (LLMs) like #ChatGPT cannot be treated as an #OSINT tool simply because...they do not get the job done. On multiple levels.
Can they be utilized for 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 tasks if operated with an understanding of their capabilities & limitations? Yes.
Image analysis for example is currently a pretty interesting (but limited) function. Can it be relied on as an independent OSINT tool? Absolutely not.
LLMs that are asked to pull out data or "intelligence" often provide instead...
🔹 Incorrect answers that sound plausible (example in images).
🔹 "Poisoned" data from disinformation, misinformation and influence campaigns. And sometimes heavily biased answers.
🔹 No sources. For intelligence, professionals need to be able to evaluate the source of data, but also corroborate it through multiple sources. One=none for intelligence analysis. LLMs provide none.
and a last one...
What ChatGPT4 does not provide by stating that "it is not available to the public", can instead easily be found via *actual* OSINT Techniques.
If you are evaluating your security perimeter, it is not recommended to ask an AI-based model...rather, do the actual OSINT work or hire a professional that can thoroughly and reliably discover risky data and vulnerabilities that are publicly available - but shouldn't.

Greetings, dear followers. Today, we'd like to discuss an often-overlooked aspect of espionage—the humble ballpoint pen—and shed light on the potential risks associated with its usage. While ballpoint pens may seem innocuous, their role in intelligence operations demands caution and consideration. Let's delve into this lesser-known aspect and examine the implications. 🖊️🔒🕵️♂️
In the realm of espionage, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. However, it's crucial to remember that words committed to paper can become evidence that may be used against you in a court of law. As we navigate the complex world of intelligence, it's essential to understand the long-term implications of documenting sensitive information.
While our esteemed agency remains committed to upholding national security and safeguarding our country's interests, it's also important to recognize that the political landscape can be unpredictable. The dynamic nature of intelligence work means that the future may hold unexpected twists and turns.
While ballpoint pens may have been an integral tool in espionage operations throughout history, the CIA remains committed to employing advanced techniques and technology to ensure operational security and mitigate risks.
So, whether you find yourself embarking on a thrilling journey in the world of intelligence or simply jotting down your thoughts, remember the adage "the pen is mightier than the sword." Exercise caution, remain aware of potential consequences, and always prioritize the integrity of our great nation.
Together, let us continue to navigate the complex landscape of intelligence while upholding the values that define us.
