Music is a coevoled system for social bonding which activates reward systems by allowing people to predict where the music is heading.

Musical scales are discrete pitches with predictable features. Virtually all scales in the world have an octave ratio.

Bohlen-Pierce is based on a ratio of three and is newer.

A taxonomy of alternative scales include
* traditional scales
* ancient or theoretical
* historical western scales
* octave based microtonal
* non octave
* timbral based scales
* procedural

These have different equivalence intervals, like the octave or tritave in BP.

There are differing numbers of steps.

Scale experience is culturally encoded.
