Holy shit Brian Blessed is better than Brando as a head of a Mediterranean crime family. He's a jovial politician and friendly uncle who will as soon slit your throat as offer you a fig. Damn.
and Siân Philips? It's like Lady Macbeth and Daria had a love child. Livia is smarter than Augustus but regularly fools him into forgetting it, and Philips practically winks at the audience as she cons him into doing what she wants. Fucking amazing.

Then John Hurt turns up as Caligula. He was excellent in everything. The casting for #IClaudius was just top notch

I can be very slow.
I read an article today about the actress Siân Phillips, who played the empress Livia in 'I, Claudius' - and someone in the comments mentioned the music in the show's opening credits, which reminded me of the snake shown in those credits...
... and then I realised (for the first bloody time!):Hang on, Blackadder nicked that snake!

Something that YouTube recommended I watch and I was intrigued enough to stick it on. A weird voiceover and a terrible pronunciation of Brian Blessed aside, this is a great little look at the art of directing on TV and film with examples of how I, Claudius did it so well. Nine minutes of your time worth a watch in my opinion. I've never seen I, Claudius (or I, Clavdivs), and I really ought to remedy that one day.
