  1. Have you ever really looked at the blooms of horse chestnuts? Yeah me either. Until a month ago I nicked this one, and now I am confused why they are not a staple for florists at this time of the year. I mean look! It even kept quite decently in that makeshift vase. And it wasn't the most beautiful I'd seen, that was on another tree, with even darker red stems, and entirely out of reach for me...

  3. This is the most magnificent horse chestnut tree that I have seen in a long time. Absolute beauty.

Sitting in the middle of a wet woodland, it completely dominates its location. Wonderful. And massive!

If you zoom in you can see people under the canopy for some scale.

A zoomed picture of the bark of a very old horse chestnut tree with a hammered shield lichen and green moss growing on it, standing at a city street near a cemetery..

  5. Horse chestnut for treatment of varicose veins

One of the most famous folk remedies for varicose veins is horse chestnut.
It improves the elasticity of the veins and strengthens their valves.

  6. My fave #BigTree yesterday, was this large #HorseChestnut #tree on a side road beside Wark Street Commons Community Park in #VictoriaBC in #QuadraVillage.

In Britain & Ireland, their seeds are used for the popular children's game conkers. During WWI there was a campaign asking everyone to collect the seeds & donate to the government. The #conkers were used as a source of #starch for #fermentation using the Clostridium acetobutylicum method devised by Chaim Weizmann to produce #acetone for use as a solvent for the production of #cordite, which was then used in #MilitaryArmaments. Weizmann's process could use any source of starch, but the government chose to ask for conkers to avoid causing starvation by depleting food sources. But conkers were found to be a poor source & the factory only produced acetone for 3 months; however, they were collected again in WWII for the same reason.

  11. Wieliczka is known for its wonderful salt mine mainly. It's an extraordinary heritage. During my last trip to southern Poland, I visited Wieliczka and discovered other gem - wonderful park where mainly chestnut trees grow.

  12. It's exciting to see the development of the Bonsai gang. Also gave a castlewellan gold a good trim, still need to do the roots and wired it up again but it's growing in girth and character which is quite rewarding. #bonsai #gardening #spring #horsechestnut #castlewellangold #ulsterbonsai
