I’m gradually improving my understanding of using #HomeAssistant to monitor domestic #Power input and output. The integration I have comes with a nice #Dashboard for accumulated #Energy but I wanted one which gave as close to an instantaneous record of power consumption and production as possible plus a history as well. This is that custom dashboard and it tells me what I want to know.

My new elec plan pays me for dumping battery power to the grid during peak, so I do. I'm anxious, & "refuse" to import power, so reserve 65% for me. Easy recharge the next day.
🤔 Early dark, cold, & ~5hrs of AC saw my battery drop to 36% overnight.😱
Today isn't sunny as promised, it's overcast. Here I sit, 11:35am on an overcast day, sunset ~7pm, & I'm already at 80% charge. Nothing to worry about. 🤦
This stuff is amazing. I'm still anxious, winter is still coming.

Unusually, I have to give credit to Endeavour Energy for their SMS comms. More info than their website!
Outage notice
Outage guesstimate (21:30)
Outage estimate (until 00:30 tomorrow)
Outage explanation (trees on lines, will require noisy work)The storm only lasted five minutes!
My battery now claims it has 46hrs left (120hrs an hour ago). I only watched TV & ran the microwave for 8 mins! 😂

After 7 mths, I've just exported from home battery to grid for the first time. I've exported heaps of solar, but this is my battery first.
My new plan has a higher feed in from 5-9pm. I sell power I've generated *to support the grid* in peak. Sure, it's no Eraring, but it's also no coal. I keep full control, it's not a VPP, & I still shouldn't need to import.
It's all quite exciting, & should generate some interesting data—& a small "profit" (reduced payback) 🙄

My 2025 solar stats:
Generated: 13080.6 MWh
Exported: 9861.6 kWh
Consumed: 4090.4 kWh
Imported: 870.6 kWhStats since August, when I got a battery, a faster charger, & 2kW extra panels for 12kW total (not optimally facing). Latitude -33.7°:
Generated: 7278 kWh
Exported: 5452.8 kWh
Consumed: 1851.8 kWh
Imported: 12.8 kWh
(7kWh of that imported in the first month—my mistake—otherwise small system-grid handshakes only) -
At this time yesterday, I was generating 9.31kW of solar.
At this time today, I'm generating 0.33kW...
Guess which day was full sun, & which is dark & smisty with local drizzle & interstate smoke. 🤷♂️
However, because I'm privileged enough to be able to take advantage of the government's home battery subsidy, I've timeshifted yesterday's sunlight for use today. No sun today? No wuckers.
Seriously, if you can, get on it.

Gosh, my #EV has been charging a while. It *was* set to stop at 80%, wasn't it? [checks again]
Aah. App says stop at 80%, current charge 95%. 🤔 Oops.
It's happened before, & you'd think I'd learn. Something about old dogs & new tricks. 🤷 The app auto-resets its display to the default charge limit. However, it doesn't *always* tell the car to reset charge limits, & I'd last charged to 100%.🤦
Oh well, that's why I have a battery. Still no grid imports. Still a solar car. 😁

Pundits have waxed on about Chris Bowen slashing the #HomeBattery scheme. Most was policy motherhood statements about the ‘Vibe’. So I modelled a representative family who had solar. And the results were sobering. #BaitAndSwitch #auspol #renewables #solar #Tesla #ClimateChange #CostOfLivingCrisis

Changes coming to the Australian #HomeBattery battery rebate:
If you're going ahead & maximising the subsidy makes a difference to your decision, don't leave it too long!
Spoiler: coming soon, the bigger the battery the lower the rebate. Despite funding being increased. It's been crazy popular so far, & the original funding is already running out.
Disclaimer: I benefited, but didn't max out my battery capacity to receive greater benefit.

Sometimes I feel like I'm living in the future, especially on sunny days like today. My roof generated a (to me) staggering 76kWh of electricity, & I sold >58kWh to the grid.
I didn't even do anything. Now the system's there, it makes magic. Sun comes up, wizards make Es, gnomes distribute Es, some go on living, some are boxed in the garage, some fuel an EV, & leftovers are sold. Sun goes down, gnomes take Es from box to run the whole house. Repeat.

1 year with 10kW #solar - inc 2mths of 12kW+24kWh #HomeBattery. Near Sydney.
Generated: 12.17MWh 🎉
Exports: 9.3MWh
Imports: 1.1MWh - almost none since battery
Consumed: 4.0MWh - inc 500kWh to battery + 1MWh to car, from solar
Top 2 months: Dec & Sep
Daily:
Max: 68.9 Jan 10kW
Min: 2.4 May 10kW
Av: 32.7 (inc 2m 12kW)Payback: 🤷 Cutting CO2 matters more. But...the more I use, the quicker the payback.
The red chart is my fave. Grid imports fell off a cliff!
-
Sun's down & September's #SolarPower easily beat every previous month bar December, generating 1.4MWh of electricity. Great weather saw an avg 46kWh/day, with a wet day only 8kWh.
I installed 10kW of panels in October, & upgraded the system in August, adding a 24kWh #HomeBattery & 4 panels for ~12kW, so now there's no like for like comparisons until Aug 2026. 😭 Oh no! I need it now to compulsively crunch! Data! DATA! 😵💫
Nonetheless, I remain very pleased... ~12kW system near Sydney.

An investment? Time will tell.
I'm privileged, & took advantage of the Aussie gov's #HomeBattery subsidy, getting a 24kWh #Sigenstor. With #solar, it will cover my energy use - including #EV - I'm excited! 😁 I can also join Amber's wholesale pricing - some risk, potential income
Cons? Batteries are exxy. Apps need to be learnt. What about renters?
Pros? I'm timeshifting the sun. YEAH! Timeshifting the fucking SUN! 🤘 Much data. 😁 🤞No more power bills. Cleaner grid. 💚

Well, @czds and I took the next step in our sustainable, resilient smart home plans with the installation of an Anker Solix f3800 whole home battery, expansion battery and Solix Home Panel. In testing, with refrigerator, all lights inside and outside, network and heat pump running, the system was predicting 10 hours of run time. Cranking the heat to 29.4°C/85°F slowly reduced that time to 3 hours 😂.

Got a decent quote for a #homebattery yesterday to supplement the new #solar. There's a software licence fee of $1,100 to activate it on the inverter. Bearing in mind their woeful choice of passwords and PINs etc I might have a look at the implications of trying to turn it on unofficially.
Financially at the moment it looks like a choice between battery, or a garden for this summer. Garden will likely win and we'll look at battery after. -
⚡️ An hour of negative energy prices just hit! Yep, the grid is literally paying me to use electricity...
🔌 Solar panels off (they’d cost me money!)
🔋 Home battery + 🚗 EV = Charging!Honestly? It’s wild that this happens. Not green 🌱 at all…
But hey, free energy to charge my car? I’ll take it. -
What are good choices for EU-made gateways for a home battery? I do not only value ease of use and economic factors for my home setup, but also want to take into account who could control my setup - after all, it's a part of the electricity grid and it would be a pity if my home battery would be a part of a giant DDOS on the electricity grid. #selfhost #homebattery #green

🔋 Testing the HomeWizard Plug-In Battery with Home Assistant
This new device claims to be a plug-and-play home battery that should work with Home Assistant—just install it yourself, no electrician required. But does it actually work as promised?
I unbox it, set it up, and put it to the test! Watch here: https://youtu.be/WOxB-d-ofj4

Got my hands on the HomeWizard ⚡️ Plug-In Battery! 🔋
Apparently, I can just unpack it and plug it into an outlet. 🔌 It should connect to my energy meter and Home Assistant right away.
Can’t wait to put it to the test! 👨🔬

Hmmmm. Huge battery pack bought via Alibaba explodes and destroys house. There might be a cautionary tale or two in there. Like 30kWh of energy stored in compact metal boxes of dodgy provenance and mounted right inside your home.

Does anyone have any experience with battery storage without any personal energy generation? I'm considering getting one to charge whilst energy price is low/ better carbon intensity, but don't know if it's worth it... Does the carbon saving from having it balance out the environmental impact of the battery itself? #BatteryPower #HomeBattery #HomePowerSolutions

This is all new to me but it looks promising.
36m² of photovoltaic cells on the roof and a beefy home battery.
The PV converter is totally RF quiet on the #hfbands in #hamradio. In use for 3 months.
The battery controller got pushed into service last week so it needs more testing but a first spin on HF does not reveal broadband noise.
Liberal amounts of #ferrite cores were applied everywhere in this installation. -
Great January day for #solar. This morning the #homebattery got charged to 95%, done two loads of washing and now the #Zappi is diverting excess to #EV rather well.
-
@suebeesley Interesting post, I like seeing stats. We have 4.2kW of #solarPV facing 200 degrees and a 10.4kWh #homebattery, our latitude is similar to yours.
December's stats;
Grid Import 454kWh 6 @ 38p 398 @ 15p
Solar gen 135kWh
Solar consumed 134kWh
Export to grid 1kWh
Total house usage 588kWh
#Zappi 200kWh 152kWh from grid
Battery supplied 123kWh to house during peak rateDaytime units £2.28
Nightime units £59.70Still working Zappi and Battery solar charging figures.

Just installed #homeassistant on a micro pc using the generic x86 download. Apart from a bit of an issue getting an EFI boot entry setup, using Mint live allowed me to sort this, all seems to be running ok. Now I need to get #Myenergi #Zappi, #Harvi, plus #Foxess #homebattery and #solaredge #inverter integrated. Be great to have everything on one display instead of 3 apps. #homeassistant seems to have found my TV and Router automatically so they are on the dashboard. Neat!
-
@AJ @ottocrat @suebeesley also good to see the wind has got up and providing a lot of power. Our recently fitted #homebattery system managed to power the whole house yesterday after a full chArge the night before. Today the solar has got it back up to 95% by lunchtime and now the #Zappi has kicked in and is now charging the car. Daytime units used since the battery was fitted 3 weeks ago has been zero!
-
Had our home battery fitted yesterday, 10.4kWh capacity. This completes our setup of 4.6kW of solar PV, Nissan Leaf EV, Zappi charge point and diverter (not an EDDI) for the hot water. Just below freezing outside but the solar is generating over 2kW, battery storing the excess, and so far 0 units of grid electricity used today!
