Boomer BiL is getting a home battery, using a NSW gov 0% interest loan. ✅ He had a big solar system before I did, but was battery averse, & he missed out on subsidies that would have saved more.
Significantly, after 2y of fierce mockery, he's finally considering an EV. I was nearly blinded by the lightbulb going off when I again told him I've paid less than $50 to charge my EV in 2y, with no home power bills. Another BiL looked the same. 😁 I'm wearing them down!

1y on, Sigenergy 24kWh battery, 10kW inverter, EVAC charger. 11.88kWp panels. 1 adult. Near Sydney.
+Generated 14.27MWh
+Exported 9.66MWh
+Battery to grid (3mths) 739.84kWh
+Load (no EV) 3.55MWh
+EV 1.01MWh
+Grid imports 29.27kWh! Around $11 at current rates. Over a full year! Mostly normal tiny system handshakes, a third errors I made, & one made by the system (resolved)I'm ahead on power bills—my annual feed in income comfortably exceeded my costs.

More Americans Are Installing Home #Batteries. Here’s Why
#homebattery installations reached a record 673MW storage in first quarter of 2026, according to #US Energy Information Administration. That trend was driven by states with high #electricity prices that have implemented policies to incentivize home battery installation
California and Hawaii accounted for majority of new battery storage, Texas and Arizona also saw significantly higher numbers

Diving into home batteries and want one I can control locally, preferably with @homeassistant and over UTP.
Plug-in or stationary, what’s your take?
Anyone have experience with specific brands? Drop your recs below!

For the first time it's 2200 and my little plug in battery is still discharging, it has 20% capacity left. I think it's been a combination of the partially sunny day and our habits. We've needed some grid power as it can only output 800W so needs the grid for the big stuff.
I suspect we'll get through to 0030 where it is set to charge on the cheap tariff. Anyway it's exciting to see it all work!

The benefits of electrification compound…
The more a home electrifies the bigger the savings. Adding rooftop solar saves an Australian household $1,000s a year. Adding electric hot water saves $1,000s more. Adding a battery, an induction cooker, reverse cycle heating and removing gas saves $1,000s more. Adding an EV is the icing on the cake. Adding maintenance and servicing savings, total automotive savings can reach over $4,000 annually. If a household does this strategically, replacing old appliances as they wear out, the upfront […]https://envirocomms5.wordpress.com/2026/06/05/the-benefits-of-electrification-compound/

I’m gradually improving my understanding of using #HomeAssistant to monitor domestic #Power input and output. The integration I have comes with a nice #Dashboard for accumulated #Energy but I wanted one which gave as close to an instantaneous record of power consumption and production as possible plus a history as well. This is that custom dashboard and it tells me what I want to know.

My new elec plan pays me for dumping battery power to the grid during peak, so I do. I'm anxious, & "refuse" to import power, so reserve 65% for me. Easy recharge the next day.
🤔 Early dark, cold, & ~5hrs of AC saw my battery drop to 36% overnight.😱
Today isn't sunny as promised, it's overcast. Here I sit, 11:35am on an overcast day, sunset ~7pm, & I'm already at 80% charge. Nothing to worry about. 🤦
This stuff is amazing. I'm still anxious, winter is still coming.

Unusually, I have to give credit to Endeavour Energy for their SMS comms. More info than their website!
Outage notice
Outage guesstimate (21:30)
Outage estimate (until 00:30 tomorrow)
Outage explanation (trees on lines, will require noisy work)The storm only lasted five minutes!
My battery now claims it has 46hrs left (120hrs an hour ago). I only watched TV & ran the microwave for 8 mins! 😂

After 7 mths, I've just exported from home battery to grid for the first time. I've exported heaps of solar, but this is my battery first.
My new plan has a higher feed in from 5-9pm. I sell power I've generated *to support the grid* in peak. Sure, it's no Eraring, but it's also no coal. I keep full control, it's not a VPP, & I still shouldn't need to import.
It's all quite exciting, & should generate some interesting data—& a small "profit" (reduced payback) 🙄
