  4. On the loss of #HockeyNightInCanada : "Fewer have noted that very few CBC viewers watch over the air as it stands — it was only five per cent, according to CBC, when they last reported it in 2012."

    nationalpost.com/opinion/chris

(That is to say, most of #HNIC viewers have been paying to watch it over cable or other means; so it shouldn't be such a struggle for them to catch a Saturday night game even if it's no longer broadcast by #CBC.)

  9. @jfmezei @chris If indeed Rogers has not gotten a good ROI for the rights, that is a business concern for them, but a company that made $820M profit in 2026 can well afford some unprofitability to uphold Canadian public access to our game, and sustain the institution of #HNIC. stockanalysis.com/stocks/rog/r

  14. @alchemistmuffin I don't care who owns or works at Rogers now, they abandoned any nod to Canadian values to go after profit many decades ago. Not a Canadian company, from this perspective. #HNIC

  24. Today Rogers have added national insult to our telecommunication oligarchy injury. They have taken away Hockey Night in Canada and Bell and Telus continue to fleece Canadians as well (look up their latest illegal fee…)

Enough is enough. The privatization and deregulation experiment has failed. Canadians are poorer, less cohesive, and less able to experience all that Canada and the world has to offer regardless of their station in life or technological ability. This started in the 80s. It must end now.

It is time to take back our national pastimes and restore the expectation that every Canadian can communicate through equal and free access to communications.

    1) Nationalize all telecommunication infrastructure under the CRTC.

    2) Nationalize Bell, Rogers, Telus, and Quebecor media assets into the CBC.

    3) Restore ad free CBC broadcasts across all platforms.

    4) Provide Fibre home Internet, TV, and Mobile connectivity to every Canadian for $10 a month within 5 years.

  34. Well, I didn’t expect this to happen so soon. I thought maybe two or three more years but it’s happening now.

All NHL games will be exclusively on cable except only few on CityTV.

End of an era for NHL in Canada. (And not a good one)

It’s a wrong move Sportsnet have made. And this just put CBC as a whole on life support right now.

  39. So Rogers, the NHL, and the CBC have officially killed Hockey Night in Canada after 75 consecutive years.

If you want Hockey on Saturday night, you need to buy a Rogers Sportsnet subscription... so they can afford their billion dollar deal with the NHL I guess?

Not even the USA is this ridiculously corporate in their TV/sports broadcasting.

Remember that time Carney said he loved the CBC and would invest in it? Hahhahahah... deflection!
