It wouldn't be at all unusual for me to find that infuriatingly frustrating. But somehow, this movie manages to make it okay. (Maybe some of it is Jimmy Stewart's gently beatific performance.)

Also, I'm intrigued by the way there are these hints, here and there, that Dowd had a more normal life at some point, but *something* happened... but we're never told what. There's no big, dramatic reveal of any trauma. Just teeny, tiny hints that there was... something.
Maybe they kind of go with that edge on the repeated, "What did you have in mind?"
There's something lurking under the surface. But we never do find out what.

Just finished the movie, but a couple of things I'd like to mention before I go crash:
The speech that follows "What is it you do, Mr. Dowd?", in the alley behind Charlie's, seems very close to the core of the whole movie.

Of course, Dr. Chumley is lying down on his own psychoanalytic couch as he unburdens his soul to Dowd. It's maybe a bit pat, maybe even clichéd now, but I doubt it was a cliché yet back then, and... it also makes a certain sense.

Dowd's perpetual answer "What did you have in mind?" whenever anyone asks him if they can do something for him has an interesting edge to it. Almost like a Zen koan, but with a challenge behind it.
Nobody ever seems to meet that challenge.

...Oh right, he also spent some time flirting with Myrtle Mae. But even that, he managed to make look like he was sexually harassing her, even though she obviously welcomed his advances.
I don't want to call him a Neanderthal; we're learning more and more that actual Neanderthals seemed to have been really cool, and I don't want to defame them.

Okay, Elwood P. Dowd has just stated that Harvey is 6 feet, 3½ inches tall. (And various other people throughout have just claimed he was 6 feet, hence my own confusion.) Glad to have that cleared up!
FWIW, IMDb says James Stewart himself was 6'3", so I think he's been playing it as if Harvey were more like 6'4" or maybe a bit more. Still not counting the ears.
