The rare flowers that grew in Kiyohara's gardens drew the attention of emperors Saga (嵯峨天皇 785-842), Junna (淳和天皇 786-840) and Ninmyō (仁明天皇 808-50), who became regular visitors. Soon the entire neighbourhood became known as 'Hanazono' (花園 the 'Flower Garden').
