@funbreaker me too! I remember #Live365. The #GrooveShark of the late 90s. I tested it about the time I was downloading songs overnight on #Napster ;-)

@musicman my understanding is that it's intended to be a free code replacement for #GrooveShark (thus the name), federated via #ActivityPub, but @funkwhale may want to correct me on that.

Ok, interesting idea... Doesn't any kind of restrictively licensed commercial music being put in a public library for streaming consist of broadcasting without permission though? Much like #Grooveshark, this sounds (to this non-lawyer) a lot like it could legally be construed as materially encouraging copyright infringement. If so, it also seems that they could be setting themselves up for trouble (really hope the project isn't US / UK based...)

I'm not that up on #Grooveshark or #Spotify (I prefer #CreativeCommons sources), but how can #FunkWhale be anything like the other two?
The benefit of both was access to commercial music, either through copyright violation, or a company paying copyright holders for the use of the music.
How can #FunkWhale do anything similar?
...Or am I missing something obvious here?
