Leserbrief im #Drahtesel 1/2026: #GPSTracker für das #Fahrrad nützt nix, wenn die Polizei nichts gegen professionellen #Fahrraddiebstahl unternehmen kann oder will.

Vor ca. 25 Jahren bin ich in Graz mit 2 Freunden zur #Polizei gegangen mit dem Wissen, wo sich 2 neue und relativ teure gestohlene Mountainbikes befinden, bevor der Laster kam, der sie ins Ausland brachte.

Getan haben die Polizisten leider nichts - außer ein Protokoll zu schreiben (wobei sie "Mountainbike" sogar falsch geschrieben haben). Wir mussten uns auch noch hämische Kommentare gefallen lassen.

Scheint sich nicht viel getan zu haben. 🫩

Ich habe Verständnis, wenn Menschen in solchen Situationen Räder zurückstehlen. Doch das darf nicht die einzige Option sein!

#GPSTracker already supports a lot of tracking, timeline and check-in features, synchronization of geo events with mobile devices, and even stats with arbitrary aggregations (by country, time range, city, region etc.). Plus some features that Foursquare never implemented (like searching for checkins on the timeline by simply selecting an area on the map).

#Microformats already support location tags through the h-adr class, although they are rarely used. Both #Webmentions and ActivityPub could send check-in activities as permalinks to pages with those tags. And the #OpenStreetMap APIs could do the heavylifting of retrieving POIs in in a certain lat/long box.

The only hurdle would be implementing the protocols under the hood, as both the Webmentions and Pubby libraries are in #Python while #GPSTracker is in #Typescript. But it could be a good chance to start writing multi-language bindings for those libraries.

#f-droid has #OMS (open street map) app's, as well as #GPStracker. I'm using qLogger and fitoTrack. I managed to import the data of those app's on #debian into some OSM software together with pictures that have the #GPS data.

All this on an #Android 6 with 8MB RAM that doesn't work with a standard google setup as it runs out of memory.
With the setup as described the phone installation sums up to around 6mb, installing the mentioned app's together with #element, #fediLab, #deltaChat, #cosyDVR and some other I end up with 7mb, so 1mb internal RAM free plus what ever SD card I use for storage!

📈 New enriched statistics have landed on GPSTracker

After answering the question when/where was I the last time I went to this area?, I have now proceeded with implementing more advanced statistics in #GPSTracker.

A new Stats page has been added, which allows you to aggregate on any dimension of your location data.

You can use it to easily answer questions such as:

• Which countries or cities have I visited more often?

• In which areas did I go last time I was in Berlin?

• When was the first/last time I went to London?

All of these aggregations have links back to the maps page, so you can easily expand them on the map and explore your routes.

I’ve just added a feature to #GPSTracker (self-hosted repo here, Github repo here that I’ve wanted for very long time.

Have you ever had conversations with your family and friends along the lines of “did we go to [place X] in 2017 or 2019? And where was that restaurant?”

Fear no more - GPSTracker’s new Select Area feature allows you to select any area on the map, and it will display any location points it stores there.

3/3: I got up this morning, checked the #GPStracker, and headed back to the incredibly dense and practically impassable woods with more cat food and a basket.

Long story short, I found her - and all five #kittens, safe and well in a frankly amazingly hidden den. I was literally two feet away and had no clue they were there until she popped her head out.

They’re all home again. The #kittenDrama is over and I’m very relieved.
