This is the most interesting post I've read on #COBOL. COBOL is an alternative syntax to Assembler because of how COBOL at a syntax level lets you, makes you deal with memory like Assembler does.

#GnuCobol compiles to C, so GnuCobol is going to have the same paradigm mismatch that OtterCobol ran into.

@silentexception It writes simple #COBOL fine. Last time I did some side project hacking with LLMs and #gnuCOBOL
- too many dialects, the bot needs to be centered, by some huge system message with what gnucobol supports (you got $$$ for Z/OS time, then hire someone, what are you doing with bots)
- COBOL lacks 3rd party libraries, so it will have to reimplement everything
- gnuCOBOL can't do it all, it will need to switch to C from time to time.

i did something today i wouldn’t have thought about doing normally. I downloaded a compiler and wrote hello world in COBOL.

Can I re-learn it? I think so. I wrote it last when i was in university. It looks familiar but I’ll be starting over from scratch. It is definitely a very different mindset that C-style programming languages. It’s compiled like C, not interpreted like PHP. I’m using GNU COBOL , so maybe GNU decided to compile it? I’ll have to look into that.

@shimst3r It struck me as a DSL for ETL. What compiler are you using? I couldn't get anything to work other than #gnucobol. Microfocus seems to be in turmoil and IBM keeps both z/OS and IBM COBOL under lock.

Ok, it was easier to find modern programming practices for bash than for #GnuCOBOL - maybe it is more fun with the paid versions of COBOL.

- lint? compiler warnings
- unit tests? Sort of? Couldn't get 'em to work
- package management? where?
- "awesome cobol" directory? more like awesome 404s

#COBOL, that obsolete language that's been supposed to "die in 5 years" for 65 years ? With over 800 billion lines of code (according to a Micro Focus study), it's like the Highlander of programming languages.

But, being a paragon of the closed model, there are #opensource projects to follow, such as the #GnuCOBOL compiler. Here is a presentation of the project at #FOSDEM2024 (@fosdem) by Fabrice LE FESSANT and Simon SOBISCH 🦕
