## We now need to pay for access to truth and lies alike: how is this progress?

It occurs to me that previously *free to read* independent news outlets are not only increasingly restricting access to their wares but demanding paid subscriptions over a limited number of free reads per period. Perhaps it is a sign that the staff/guests writers are getting more numerous and need to be paid. They can do this because their competitors are no longer trusted to write the truth beyond parroting-journalism (which is just transcription services, not journalism as such). From my perspective, there’s much to be said about a *small footprint* which translate to the idealism that *truth* is not a commodity, it is a moral and ethical duty.

I now find myself turning to other sources and becoming more and more sceptical about what I read that is newsworthy. These are interesting times indeed.

There was a time when our *representatives* in Parliament undestood they had a duty of keeping Citizens **informed** and did so through *Public Broadcasters* funded adequately to carry out this vital social democratic function. That too has fallen by the wayside.

If there is a conspiracy to dumb the *Proles* down into blind servility, I have to say, *It’s working well*.

The flaw in ABC reporting is a conflation of *balanced reporting* and *both-sidedism*. As a result we get shit reporting norming with corporate media turning into a not so beige colour of the political divide.

I pick and choose what I read (I don’t view it anymore) from the #ABC. It’s getting less and less as time goes by.

I guess it reflects the right-wing bias in our #Labor govt.

TBF, #tRump has an impact on the rest of the world and that makes him newsworthy no matter one’s personal opinion of #POSUS or his administration. But newsworthy doesn’t mean ‘parroting’ what he said and ought to be footnoted with some kind of ‘fact checking’, I agree. I don’t expect the ABC to pull up it’s socks anytime soon. #RachelWithers expressed my sentiments and frustration with many TV hosts in her article:

"... 7.30’s Sarah Ferguson opening by asking the Liberal leader to “categorically rule out” forming government with One Nation, based on his recent criticism. In classic politician speak, Taylor said there was “no plan” to do so, arguing the Coalition wanted to govern in its own right. Ferguson spent three minutes and four questions trying to pin him down, becoming increasingly explicit in her “rule out” framing, noting this is what she was “looking for”.

“There is a slight difference between ‘There is no plan’ and ‘I, Angus Taylor as the leader of the Liberal Party, am ruling out forming government with One Nation’,” Ferguson finished, to which Taylor responded there was “no plan”. In total, I counted six “no plan” responses and one “I’m ruling it out” from the Liberal leader, though that didn’t stop the ABC running the headline “Angus Taylor rules out One Nation coalition once and for all”.

The semantics were tiresome, not least because we are no closer to knowing what the Liberals would do in the event of a hung parliament (Ferguson’s questions improved after this, for the record, grilling Taylor on his criticism of care economy wage rises). Did we gain anything of value, other than a “gotcha”, if a Taylor-led party somehow wins enough seats to contemplate governing with One Nation, which it’d likely choose over most crossbench options?

The question itself needs to be “ruled out” for our increasingly fractured electorate, in which it is becoming less likely that any one party will win a majority of seats. It’s an ask regularly made of Labor about the Greens, with Anthony Albanese all too eager to rule that one out — nevermind that, if Labor’s “wide but shallow” majority gets any shallower, he might soon find himself having to work with minor parties or independents to form government."

An #ABCNews piece by #JacobGreber (posted 8 hrs ago) dregs out the old #NeoLiberal #TrickleDownPonzieScheme idea that if you point detractors to some #CheeryPicking you might stop them from focusing on the abundance piled up in the mansion’s pantry. The headline says it all: “Curbing well-off taxpayers' access to key programs could save billions.” Which double talk for : Here are the crumbs we been promissing for the last 40 years, but don’t look at the dinner table. Of course, the author of the article quotes the #IPA (an old conservative mouthpiece) to bolser the argument, there’s at least ‘$20 billion” to be saved from the budget here.

Let’s be clear. This is an #Opinion piece, not an #Analysis.

1) All Australian citizens and permanent residents ought to be entitled to appropriate social services regardless of their wealth or standing in the community.
2) If you tax the #Rich and #SuperProfits to redistribute weatlh for the greater benefit of society as a whole there would be more than $20B on offer to build a fairer and more equitable Australia.

It’s essentially an ‘everything you wanted to know about renewable’s role in how we use electricity’ simple explainer. As an added bonus, it clarifies the role #Gas as #peakers and explains why #nuclear plants don’t get a look-in in the Australian energy generation market. It also uses the South Australia energy profile to foretell where we go from here nationally and provided a real world example of the ‘base load’ that will ultimately be required (shows up the crazy #LNP claims for the lies that they are).

So the govt’s Health budget is in deficit… so what? What I wanted to know from this article is why a ‘blow out’ occured. Which health services growth were underestimated and why? Next I want to know what is being done about the budget deficit in Health and how the govt can improve its budget estimates. Another piece of information that I’d like to know is why the previous Minister for Health didn’t see this coming. None of this was answered by the article. The following quotes reinforce my understanding that writing hoping to make a living wage out of publishing one’s work is a dream very, very few authors achieve (though when they do most hit the jackpot). It seems that due to the vagaries of the publishing world, some are chosen to succeed, most are not.

Does anyone else find that news reporting broadcasts which include ‘background’ musical loops (just had to suffer one on the ABC about the Chinese Premier’s visit) are annoying, mask the clarity of the reporter’s voice (especially when the reporter’s accent is not ‘standard’ - no disrespect intended) and generally makes the listener strain to hear clearly? It doesn’t help that with old age my hearing is impaired.
