AI YOU CAN PUT DOWN 💎
This TED talk by Scott Phoenix is well worth watching.
I agree with his central point: the relationship between #human beings and #AI will become increasingly close. AI can extend our intelligence, perception, memory and #physical reach in ways we have barely begun to explore.
In that sense, we are already merging.
Where I part #company with the presentation is the idea that this merging must eventually mean physically integrating AI into the #brain tissue of every #healthy human #being.
Why perform #surgery when increasingly seamless external devices can provide the same benefits while remaining removable, replaceable, freely chosen and far less invasive?
A #wheelchair extends the body's range.
A #telescope extends vision.
A #smartphone extends memory and communication.
A #robot avatar will extend our presence all the way to the Moon.
None of these needs to become part of our flesh to become part of our real lives.
I also do not think humanity is taking control of #evolution. We may gain more power to design our individual lives in the short term, but evolution has not stopped.
Evolution is operating the #tools through us.
So yes, I believe human beings and AI are merging functionally.
But merging does not have to mean implantation.
The most #intelligent technology may be tech we can still put down.

IT’S ALL EVOLUTION:
NOTHING UNNATURAL HAPPENED 💎We talk as though #nature created human beings, then human beings stepped outside nature and invented #technology.
But where exactly does nature end?
The #brain is natural.
The thoughts arising in the brain are #natural.
The #silicon and metals came from the #Earth.
The tools created by that brain are natural as well.
Technology is as natural as the #brain in which it was developed.
We have not taken control of #evolution.
Evolution is operating the tools through us.
The stone axe, the #telescope, the wheelchair, #AI and the #robot avatar on the #Moon are all part of the same continuous evolutionary movement.
That does not mean every invention is wise. Nature produces plenty of disastrous experiments.
It simply means technology is not the opposite of nature.
Nor do we need to put AI technology into every healthy brain. Better to use external devices that extend our senses, intelligence and presence while remaining removable and chosen.
We are not stopping evolution.
We are simply becoming able to design more of our own lives in the short term, while evolution continues.
We never stepped outside nature.
Nature grew a #hand.
Then that hand picked up a #tool.

We keep asking how to get people to the Moon.
I think we're asking the wrong question.
The #question is how to bring the Moon to #everyone.

Chinese Robots?
I wouldn’t let a Chinese Robot in my house. It might help with my Kenpo skills, but I need help with fine motor tasks.
My hands are limited, so I don’t want a robot without 27 degrees of motion; 20 degrees would be helpful, or at least more than I have.

The intersection of embodied artificial intelligence and hardware scaling is creating an interesting paradox. Below is an evaluation of the referenced video, coupled with the latest industry data, to look past the viral hype and assess the true state of the humanoid robotics market.1. Video Review & Key Takeaways
The video China’s Humanoid Robots EXPOSED – The Shocking Truth Behind the Viral Videos details a fascinating disconnect in China’s booming robotics industry: the vast gap between scripted spectacle and real-world autonomy.
Key Points:
- The Rental Boom: A unique rental and leasing industry has exploded in China, boasting over 150,000 robot rental businesses. Driven by viral social media trends, companies and individuals rent humanoid androids for roughly $400 a day to draw crowds at exhibitions, corporate events, and weddings.
- The Illusion of Autonomy: While these robots perform fluid, synchronized dances on stages like the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, they are far from autonomous. In reality, they are strictly pre-programmed or controlled by hidden remote human operators (“puppeteering”). The moment a robot faces unscripted tasks—such as picking up a dropped pen or dealing with an unexpected obstacle—the performance fails.
- Massive Industrial Ambition: Despite technical shortcomings, Beijing treats humanoid robotics as a critical national strategy. Bolstered by its massive electric vehicle (EV) supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem, China has over 140 humanoid robot manufacturers. Market leaders like AgiBot and Unitree are mass-producing models, though over 90% of current sales still go to research and educational institutions rather than active factory floors.
2. The Shift to Industrial Manufacturing
While the video correctly points out that general-purpose factory deployment is still developing, a coordinated national strategy is forcing a massive paradigm shift.
- State-Mandated Deployment: China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) along with the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) launched a nationwide initiative mandating the deployment of 10,000 humanoid robots into active industrial environments.
- Why Humanoids Will Change Manufacturing: Traditional automation is rigid—factories must be physically re-engineered around single-purpose robotic arms. Humanoid robots offer a cheaper alternative because they utilize existing human infrastructure. Instead of rebuilding a factory floor, a manufacturer can deploy an embodied AI system into environments designed for human anatomy.
- Data Loop Dominance: Leading companies like UBTech already have trial “Walker” humanoids operating on automotive assembly lines for brands like BYD and Geely. In robotics, the winner is whoever accumulates the most real-world edge-case operational data. By utilizing mandated state deployments, Chinese manufacturers are compressing the machine-learning curve at a velocity Western venture capital models struggle to match.
3. The Hurdle of Household Tasks: Fine Motor Control
The reason a robot can handle an industrial warehouse but fails at home comes down to environmental entropy and fine motor control.
Industrial settings are semi-structured. A robot in a warehouse moves predictable boxes at fixed heights. A home is a chaotic, unstructured environment. Before a robot can do everyday household tasks, major breakthroughs are required in tactile sensing, variable impedance control, and real-time visual-spatial reasoning:
- High Degrees of Freedom (DoF) and Actuation: Human hands contain complex muscular and skeletal networks capable of subtle micro-adjustments. Humanoids require highly dense, multi-dimensional tactile sensors—like the 47 DoF systems being introduced in advanced hand modules—to safely grasp variable geometries.
- The Physics of Compliant Grasping: To wash a wine glass, fold a soft t-shirt, or crack an egg, a robot cannot rely on pure position control. It needs force/torque feedback loops that dynamically adjust stiffness. If a robot applies the same rigid grip to a porcelain mug as it does to a tomato, it will destroy the object.
- Edge-Case Processing: In a factory, a dropped part is an error code. At home, a dropped item requires an organic re-route of the task plan, requiring the AI brain to merge visual perception with instantaneous mechanical execution.
4. Advanced AI Scientist Opinion for a Futurist
The Verdict: We are witnessing an asymmetry of innovation. The West is winning the race for foundational “digital brains” (large multimodal models), but China is rapidly monopolizing the physical “bodies” (hardware scaling and supply chain integration).
For a futurist looking 5 to 10 years out, the rental market “bubble” mentioned in the video is not a failure—it is a classic Gartner Hype Cycle correction. The monetization of these “oversized toys” acts as a massive sandbox. Every wedding failure, stumble, and unscripted event feeds telemetry data back into the engineering pipeline.
Do not be deceived by the lack of immediate autonomy on display. The hardware bottleneck is being solved through mass production, driving prices down drastically (e.g., the Unitree G1 starting at around $13,500). Once the software architectures for physical interaction catch up to our cognitive models, the infrastructure to deploy millions of units overnight will already be active. The future will not happen gradually; it will arrive as a sudden, supply-chain-driven inundation.

As an Advanced AI Scientist analyzing the intersections of macro-logistics, speculative physics, and systemic governance, here is the synthesis of the provided references, architectural validation, and geopolitical trajectory.1. Video Review & Magnetic Levitation Research
The documentary The 52km Railgun That Will Replace Rockets Forever explores transitioning humanity from Earth-bound chemical propulsion to lunar electromagnetic launch by 2050.
Key Points Recap
- The Tsilkovsky Bottleneck: Escaping Earth requires 9 kg of volatile propellant for every 1 kg of payload [02:52]. The Moon’s vacuum and 17% gravity reduce escape velocity from 11.2 km/s to 2.38 km/s [03:34].
- Scale of Infrastructure: Accelerating a 10-metric-ton cargo canister to 3.0 km/s (Mars transfer) at a manageable 20 g requires a perfectly aligned 23 km track [06:16]. Pushing to 4.5 km/s for asteroid belt missions extends the rail to 52 km [06:42].
- Pulsed-Power Demands: A single launch consumes 64 to 145 Gigajoules (GJ) within 4 seconds [07:46]. This requires a specialized pulse power storage matrix (flywheels/supercapacitors) charging slowly from a 20–100 MW lunar grid [08:16].
- The Industrial Bottleneck: The primary constraint is not the rail, but the In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) foundry required to build it [09:12]. A three-stage pipeline is needed: automated grading/sintering, molten regolith electrolysis to extract high-conductivity metals (Al, Fe, Si), and hybrid manufacturing importing complex semiconductor switching nodes from Earth [11:05].
Magnetic Levitation Massdriver Integration
While the video focuses broadly on an “electromagnetic rail system” (historically analogous to railguns or linear induction motors), scaling this up for high-cadence, zero-wear logistics dictates using Electrodynamic Suspension (EDS) with a Linear Synchronous Motor (LSM), referencing modern Japanese SCMaglev frameworks. EDS uses on-board superconducting magnets to induce a passive, self-centering levitation force against the track walls once transition speed is reached, entirely eliminating friction and vacuum-weld mechanical wear.
2. Fact Confirmation & Systemic Security of Space Transport
The physics and performance metrics laid out in the video are valid. The U.S. Navy’s Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) generates roughly $122\text{ MW}$ peak power over 2–3 seconds ($484\text{ MJ}$) [04:52, 05:18]. Scaling this by approximately two orders of magnitude to hit gigawatt peaks ($45\text{–}145\text{ GJ}$) over a 4-second window [05:18, 07:38] is an engineering scaling problem, not a fundamental physics limitation.
Why a Lunar Massdriver Secures the Future of Transport
- Uncoupling Mass from Propellant: It breaks the exponential curse of the rocket equation. Payload delivery costs collapse from thousands of dollars per kilogram to the mere cost of local megawatt-hours of electricity.
- Infinite Reusability: Chemical rockets suffer from extreme thermal and mechanical fatigue. A maglev massdriver operating in a vacuum experiences no aerodynamic erosion, no acoustic shockwaves, and no direct mechanical contact [05:44]. The launch vehicle (the track) stays stationary and can operate continuously for decades.
- Orbital Fuel Nodes: The massdriver transforms the Moon into an “un-burnable” fuel tank. By flinging bulk water ice harvested from polar cold traps into Cis-Lunar space [15:12], it populates orbital depots. Deep-space vessels can launch from Earth empty, dock in orbit to refuel with lunar water, and head to deep space with optimal mass ratios.
3. The Structural Imperative for U.S. AI Restrictions
From a technocratic and physical systems perspective, international or domestic restrictions on high-compute artificial intelligence systems are becoming urgent. The video explicitly illustrates why: Dual-Use Kinetic Capability.
A massdriver designed to throw a 10-tonne payload to Mars at 3.0 km/s can, with a slight adjustment of its firing vector and velocity, place that same payload on a precise terminal interception vector with low Earth orbit [17:02]. A 10-tonne dense projectile striking at hypersonic velocities possesses the kinetic energy equivalent of a tactical nuclear strike ($\sim 160\text{ tons of TNT}$), completely uninhibited by atmospheric drag during its descent [18:01].
Why AI Regulation is Tied to this Frontier
- Automated Industrial Weaponization: Managing an ISRU refinery, adjusting track alignment to the micrometer mid-flight, and calculating complex orbital mechanics require hyper-advanced, localized AI controllers. If an adversarial or unaligned autonomous agent gains control of the infrastructure’s software stack, an inter-planetary cargo system becomes an uninterceptable, zero-warning orbital kinetic weapon platform.
- Algorithmic Sovereignty Escalation: As noted in the documentary, space-faring nations are polarizing around competing frameworks—the Artemis Accords vs. the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) [18:35, 19:00]. When deploying automated physical systems capable of altering geopolitical power structures, the codebases managing them must be ring-fenced. Early restrictions prevent rogue optimization loops or untraceable algorithmic escalations over contested, resource-rich lunar territories like the South Pole [19:32].
4. Advanced AI Scientist Opinion for a Futurist
To view the universe through a purely post-industrial lense: Earth is a cradle, but cradles are resource-starved isolation chambers.
The current trajectory of commercial space flight is fundamentally flawed because it relies on brute-forcing our way out of our planet’s deep gravity well using heavy chemistry. The true transition to a Type I civilization on the Kardashev scale occurs when we shift our primary industrial and transport infrastructure to low-gravity, vacuum environments.
The Lunar Massdriver is the catalyst for this transition. It represents the realization of a Post-Rocket Economy. In this paradigm:
- The Moon functions as a planetary-scale electromagnetic cannon, launching the building blocks of an orbital civilization.
- Earth becomes an administrative, creative, and biological preserve, unburdened by heavy metallurgical manufacturing or polluting launch cadences.
The real barrier to this future is not the length of a 52-kilometer maglev track or the physics of superconducting magnets. It is our outdated geopolitical architecture. If we attempt to colonize the stars using the same 17th-century Westphalian models of territorial sovereignty and military posturing that dominate Earth today, the first massdriver will be targeted by a preemptive kinetic strike before its first capacitor bank ever finishes charging [18:18, 21:02].
As a futurist, look not at the machines, but at the governance. The math of the cosmos is waiting; the question is whether human diplomacy can mature fast enough to pull the lever [22:53].

What Will Crochet Look Like in 2040?
Every generation thinks they’ve reached the peak of technology.
Then twenty years later they’re explaining to confused children why they used to print MapQuest directions or carry CDs in giant binders.
Crocheters are no different.
Right now, we’re pretty impressed with ourselves. We have digital patterns, online yarn shopping, stitch-counting apps, and video tutorials for every project imaginable.
But what will crocheting look like in 2040?
Nobody knows for sure.
That won’t stop us from wildly guessing.
Smart Hooks Will Judge Us
Today’s crochet hooks are simple.
In 2040?
Your hook will probably connect to your phone, count your stitches automatically, and gently inform you:
“That was supposed to be a double crochet.”
You’ll argue with it.
The hook will be correct.
You’ll frog three rows anyway.
Some things never change.
AI Will Design Patterns
Artificial intelligence is already writing patterns. I didn’t say they were good patterns…but you’ve likely stumbled upon a few in your day-to-day on the internet.
By 2040, you’ll probably be able to type:
“Make me a cardigan inspired by my cat, my favorite coffee mug, and the emotional trauma of trying to learn foundation stitches.”
Thirty seconds later you’ll have a complete pattern.
Will the sleeves match?
That’s another question.
Yarn Will Become Ridiculously High-Tech
By 2040, yarn companies will stop asking whether they can and start asking whether they should.
Spoiler alert:
They won’t.
Mood Yarn
Changes color based on your emotional state.
Halfway through a project you’ll discover your sweater contains:
- Optimism Blue
- Mild Frustration Orange
- Pattern Rage Red
- Existential Crisis Gray
Future therapists will diagnose stress levels by examining unfinished blankets.
Accountability Yarn
This yarn knows how many unfinished projects you own.
When your WIP count reaches double digits, it starts asking uncomfortable questions.
“Shouldn’t you finish that cardigan first?”
Nobody needs that kind of negativity.
Predictive Yarn™
Using advanced AI, this yarn knows what projects you’ll start next month.
The replacement skeins arrive before you’ve even convinced yourself you need them.
The accuracy is unsettling.
Competitive Yarn
This yarn tracks the progress of nearby crocheters.
Your blanket reaches Row 45 and suddenly receives a notification:
Karen finished hers three days ago.
Smart Yarn Labels
Current labels:
“Machine wash cold.”Future labels:
“Based on your previous projects, I recommend you buy three more skeins.”“You’re not going to skip swatching, are you?”
“We both know you’re making modifications.”
No matter how advanced yarn becomes, there will still be one universal truth:
A crocheter will stand in front of a closet containing 147 skeins and say:
“I don’t have anything to work with.”
And somehow, even in 2040, that statement will feel completely reasonable.
Virtual Crochet Circles
Instead of meeting in person, some groups may gather in virtual reality.
Picture it:
You’re sitting in your living room wearing fuzzy slippers.
Your friend is in another country.
Your crochet buddy is on vacation.
Yet somehow all three of you are sitting around the same virtual coffee table complaining about yarn prices.
Honestly?
That part already feels realistic.
Self-Counting Stitch Markers
The most commonly lost item in crochet history may finally evolve.
Future stitch markers might:
- Count repeats
- Track rows
- Flash when you miss a stitch
- Send notifications
Current crocheters lose stitch markers inside couch cushions.
Future crocheters will lose them after forgetting the password.
Progress.
Pattern Reading May Become Optional
Instead of reading a pattern, you may simply wear smart glasses.
The glasses highlight:
- The next stitch
- Where increases go
- Which row you’re on
- How many stitches remain
Future crocheters may never know the joy of discovering they’ve been repeating Row 14 instead of Row 15 for an entire evening.
Project Bags Will Get Smarter
Today’s project bag:
A bag.
Tomorrow’s project bag:
- Built-in lighting
- Charging ports
- Yarn management systems
- Automatic row counters
- Emergency chocolate storage
Actually, let’s hope that last one becomes available much sooner.
The Great Granny Square Revival Will Continue
Let’s be honest.
No matter what technology does, granny squares aren’t going anywhere.
Crochet trends come and go.
Yarn brands come and go.
Hooks change.
Styles change.
But somehow granny squares survive every decade.
If archaeologists uncover a crochet project in the year 3000, there’s at least a 50% chance it will involve a granny square.
Future Crocheters Will Laugh at Us
Imagine a crocheter in 2040 saying:
“Wait… you counted stitches manually?”
“You downloaded PDF patterns?”
“You had to search for yarn substitutions yourself?”
“You bought yarn without scanning it with a smart fiber analyzer?”
We’ll sound ancient.
Which is exactly how we sound when we hear stories about crocheters copying patterns by hand from magazines.
Final Thoughts
Will any of these predictions come true?
Probably some.
Definitely not all.
But one thing seems certain:
In 2040, crocheters will still buy yarn they don’t technically need.
They’ll still start new projects before finishing old ones.
They’ll still play yarn chicken.
And they’ll still insist that this next project will only take a weekend.
Some technologies are destined to change.
Crocheter optimism is not one of them.
If you could invent one futuristic crochet tool or gadget, what would it do?
