Camping bans, sweeps, and punishing people for sleeping outside are the equivalent of seeing people in a lifeboat and shooting at the boat.
Although not surprised, we are incredibly angered by the recent Supreme Court ruling on the City of Grants Pass v. Johnson. Our unhoused neighbors already face disproportionate rates of policing and criminalization, frequently being arrested for things that those with enough money have the luxury of doing privately. To add sleep, a basic biological necessity, to this list of punishable offenses is shameful and immoral.
We do not have to allow this in Boston. We can stand with our unhoused neighbors in solidarity and demand that our government takes evidence-based, humane approaches to homelessness in our communities. Sleeping is not a crime. Camping is not a crime. Surviving is not a crime. We must do better.
Swipe to the last few slides for some concrete actions you can take today, and stay tuned for more from us in the next few days. Though it may seem futile, Mayor Wu’s office does count the number of calls and emails she receives about the anti-camping ordinance. The higher those numbers, the further up the agenda this goes. As we head into election season, many politicians will again pretend to care about their constituents to ensure that they can hold onto their office, and we can use that to our advantage as we advocate on a policy level along with other types of direct action.
