Following yesterday's major snowstorm, we had an unexpected visitor, today. In fact three of them. Fox Sparrows (speaking of the red morph) are not uncommon in our region in the winter, but they are woodland birds that breed in the boreal north, and look for dense thickets here. Since I started keeping track (four years ago), I've never seen them in our yard. It must really be slim pickin's out there for three of these pretty Sparrows to pay us a visit and sample the cuisine, while scratching and hopping.

Neat, I've never seen Fox Sparrows outside my building before! But there were two of them together, foraging with the Juncos and House Sparrows.

A Northern saw-whet owl, a fox sparrow, and a Carolina wren in Prospect Park.

(The photo of the owl was taken with a very long lens while standing on the pavement of a busy thoroughfare, and the posting of it was delayed until after the owl was confirmed to have moved on to a new site.)
