  1. Following yesterday's major snowstorm, we had an unexpected visitor, today. In fact three of them. Fox Sparrows (speaking of the red morph) are not uncommon in our region in the winter, but they are woodland birds that breed in the boreal north, and look for dense thickets here. Since I started keeping track (four years ago), I've never seen them in our yard. It must really be slim pickin's out there for three of these pretty Sparrows to pay us a visit and sample the cuisine, while scratching and hopping.

  11. Neat, I've never seen Fox Sparrows outside my building before! But there were two of them together, foraging with the Juncos and House Sparrows.

(I really got to appreciate how big and chunky these guys are, compared to other sparrows. Not as big as towhees, but pretty big!) -- Vancouver, Nov 13

(The photo of the owl was taken with a very long lens while standing on the pavement of a busy thoroughfare, and the posting of it was delayed until after the owl was confirmed to have moved on to a new site.)

  14. When I first started on my wanders and taking photos of birds I could not tell one kind of sparrow from another. They were all small-ish brown birds, chirping and flitting. #FoxSparrow catches the morning sun before getting to work raking the soil with their claws. They dig for their food. These birds have gorgeous dark chevrons on their chests. I'd love to have a sweater vest like this! #LekwungenTerritory #birds #birdphotography #PNW #wander

  16. It's hard to get a good photo of a Fox Sparrow because they like to hang out in dense thickets, but this bird was cooperative enough to briefly perch on a branch in good lighting.
