De mensheid heeft vanaf woensdag voor dit jaar meer voedsel en grondstoffen gebruikt dan de aarde jaarlijks kan aanleveren. De rest van 2023 leven mensen dus op ‘reserves’, stelt het Global Footprint Network, een onafhankelijke internationale denktank die dit onderzoek elk jaar uitvoert. De organisatie noemt deze dag daarom Earth Overshoot Day.
