Alright, here's a VP9 example and an h264 example side by side on one page: https://ajroach42.neocities.org/
My conclusion here is starting to feel a lot like my #floppycast conclusion: There are ways to go about half the size of the current best option while retaining the quality of the current best option, or to have better quality than the current best option at the same file size.
But those ways are not the best option, because the best option needs to be widely accessible and not especially computationally expensive.
In another two or three years, AV1 will probably be the best option, or maybe h265. Right now it's VP9+Opus or h264 depending on your particular use case.

You may recall, several years ago, I developed a technique for putting podcasts on floppydisks. I called it a #floppycast
I sold episodes of Expedition Sasquatch on Floppycast for a while. I'll probably start doing it again if there is any interest. Please reach out to me if you're interested in an Expedition Sasquatch Floppycast.

If you don't want to pay for the episode, and you're not willing to wait until next week, you can hear Expedition Sasquatch on special #floppycast
That's right, it's a 16 minute podcast episode compressed down to 8Kbps so that it'll fit on a floppydisk.

Did you know that @Username_Here_ASAP and I write and produce a podcast (and a TV show) about the world's worst bigfoot hunter, his attempts to find and kill bigfoot, and the things he finds and kills instead?
It's free, at https://expeditionsasquatch.org, but the first episode is also available as a sub 1.4 MB #floppycast that will fit on a #floppydisc
you can read more about the creation of this floppycast on my blog https://ajroach42.com/floppycasts-1-44mb-podcasts/

I think about music a lot. I think about sound a lot.
I also spent years working in a concert venue, so my ears are pretty garbage at this point.
Even with my garbage ears, I can hear a good system from a bad one (and you could too, if you knew where to listen and had consistent exposure to each.)
I'll tolerate a lot of analog noise and decay in a signal. I'll tolerate a little more digital noise than I used to (see #floppycast for the extreme of this.)

Once I have the video finished, I'm going to look in to the video equivalent of a #floppycast (which, in this case, might be an svcd? Or maybe just an xvid file.)
I wonder if I could get it to do video playback...
Goddamn it. Now I gotta find out what is the highest bitrate video that a pentium will play. (that sentence is wrong, but I'm too far past that thought in my head to figure out how to fix it.)
-
And it plays podcasts. Or at least it plays this specific #floppycast
More pictures to come.

The ogg/opus versioon is 1.3MB, so that qualifies it pretty handily as a #FloppyCast
I'm going to be pushing this link out everywhere once the aggregators have approved us, but in the meantime I am excited to have this out in the world.
More art, more writing, more episodes, and more podcasts coming soon.
(and thanks to @Username_Here_ASAP for lending his voice to this admittedly ridiculous project.)

Alright, anyone who would like to hear a #floppycast sub 1.4MB preview of the 13 minute comedy podcast episode I just finished editing please message me and I'll send it to you.

I got one more omnibook (an 800CT)
This will be my last omnibook for a while, I imagine.
This one was cheap, and damaged, but repair was really simple and now it boots to a clean install of Windows 98.
It has a pentium MMX at 166MHz. It can play Opus files without any issue, and it appears that the included battery even has some life left in it.
This one is going to serve as part of my #zinestation, and has served as a good demonstration that #floppycast works on a pentium MMX.

I see, the #floppycast file would end up in the blobs folders of SSB users, so squeezing file size would be really nice to them.

Too little practical experience with dat, ipfs or SSB. Read a piece on HN lately on how ipfs is not yet up to snuff and not well managed. A commenter mentioned that dat is way ahead with that respect.
Propably a #floppycast could be distributed via all those fancy new p2p channels. -

Distribution of the #floppycast via dat:// or ipfs would make sense as well.

Contemplating on starting a blogcast about climate change. German media is really neglecting the topic and I'd like to translate, contextualize and comment on english spoken media coverage. Doing this in a #floppycast format would really fit well with the topic of low ressource usage. #formfollowsfunction

Would be really nice if #floppycast ing would become a thing, preferably with codec2 and wavenet decoding and fediverse integration.

@ajroach42
Just read your blog post on #floppycasts - it sounds like a really interesting project. Personally I prefer the idea of a shorter #floppycast with better audio quality.I've been podcasting for over 11 years now, and I keep threatening to do a talk #shotcast - so I might see if I can combine it with this concept to keep the length down.

Something to consider re: #floppycast - Average dialup bitrate (towards the end of the dialup era) was 40–50 kbit/s, right?
These files are averaging about 9kbps.
You could stream a #floppycast on a dialup connection without saturating the connection.

Alright, I wrote a blogpost about my #floppycast adventures: http://ajroach42.com/floppycasts-1-44mb-podcasts/
This doesn't have much new compared to my posts from this weekend, but here they are ordered and coherent.
I also posted some audio samples: http://ajroach42.com/floppycast-examples/
Keep in mind that both samples will sound pretty much horrific, but also that each sample is around 100kb for more than a minute of audio.
I prefer the Opus file to the mp3 file, as it's a little less muddy during speech (but ruins music.)
