@ami_angelwings Låt den rätte komma in. The Swedish movie by Thomas Alfredson (son of the late great Hasse!).
Incredibly well made movie, that captures the era and region absolutely perfectly. It’s like watching my own memories come to life (with the obvious exceptions).
It’s incredibly raw and the slow dreary pace perfectly captures the time. It was exactly that awful to go to school, the weather was just as dark and depressing and rainy.
I’m not going to give away the actual plot, it’s far better to just watch the movie and take it all in. Perfect for Halloween if nothing else. One of the best movies I have ever seen, and if you are going to watch one “foreign” film, this one is it.
WARNING, do not watch the American remake. It’s one of the worst movies I have ever seen (Uwe Boll is better!). It utterly fails miserably in every possible way to capture anything of the original. Star Wars IX is a masterpiece in comparison. Avoid at all cost!
@ami_angelwings Legends & Lattes. It was only last month, as I was about to leave the book store, that I noticed the first two books in the series on the shelf. The premise sounded interesting, so I grabbed them both. And I’m glad I did, because these are my favourite books since Hitchhiker’s Guide. I went back last week to grab the third book and the graphic novel adaptation.
I absolutely love these. The first one especially is a very cozy fantasy: An orc woman gives up adventuring to open a coffee shop in a town that has never even heard of coffee before. It’s not without action, but the characters try to resolve things without resorting to the usual violent means. A very relaxing read and strongly recommended.
So, I know everybody will hate me, but I actually think most "deconstructions" of genres are of genres that don't really need it, like magical girls are the fantasies of little girls to be powerful in a world that says their fantasies are frivolous.
However, the military FPS & the US Military absolutely need to be criticized & Spec Ops The Line is the perfect game to do it. I first heard about it from my academic readings: a video game that anti-militarization academics actually liked. That got my attention.
Then I watched @MattyF play it & it changed him. But the biggest endorsement is a comment on YouTube where somebody played it when they were considering joining the US army & decided after against it. "I realized I'm not as good a person as I thought I was."
The Lord of the Rings.
What can I say? There's a reason people are still talking about it. This is medieval fantasy written by a man whose literal job was to know and understand medieval literature and history, and it shows. It's intricately plotted, with a lot to say but doesn't beat you over the head with it. It's also somewhat less racist than other stuff that came out in the 1950s.
What is your favorite work/series/art/etc that starts with the letter "L"?
Also include why you like it!
The rules are lax, you can include or exclude "A" or "The" as you want (e.g. The Predator can go under T or P). You can also remove the franchise name if you want (e.g. Star Trek: Voyager can go under S or V). Pronouns (I, you, etc) can't be excluded tho.
Include both the hashtags #FavWorkL and #FavWorkAtoZ so we can sort the answers.
You can also answer the previous #FavWorkA, #FavWorkB #FavWorkC etc too if you missed it! There's no deadline.
My taste in music has stagnated over the years. Then I watched the Billboard awards in 2024.Stray Kids performed and I became a fan. Since then I've become a STAY and supporter of BTS, Epik High, BabyMonster, Le Sserafim, and Twice. So my #FavWorkK is K-Pop because it's different from anything I'm hearing and the choreography is so high energy.
I'm probably forgetting something that I'll regret again, but my #FavWorkK is "Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes", a brilliant bomb disarming co-op game released before asymmetrical co-op became popular.
The brilliant part is you only need 1 copy because one player just needs the bomb manual which you print out. The point is the handler with the manual cannot see the bomb, the person disarming the bomb doesn't have the manual and needs to describe what they see. It's simple and brilliant and so fun to watch and play and also very revealing.
I used it in social work class to illustrate how people see things differently based on background, culture, individuality, etc... Is that symbol a "backwards b" or a d? how patient are you when your partner doesn't get you? So good.
@ami_angelwings I’ve just finished reading the first two Kiki’s Delivery Service books earlier this week, and finally got around to watching the movies back in January. I’m gonna have to go with the whole series for this one. The books are nice and chill, and were quite relaxing. The movies are a bit more exciting, particularly the live-action one. All of them are fun stories.
@ami_angelwings Given the buzz around a new stop-motion animated feature lately, it feels appropriate that my #FavWorkK would be Kubo And The Two Strings. It's gorgeously animated, of course, and inventive as heck with a huge amount of heart. Just an amazing film.
@ami_angelwings
I’ve never seen K-On! So I’ll have to go with Kaguya-sama. I thought I wouldn’t like it, at first, and then I just fell in love with the series.
@[email protected] Katalepsis, which gave me my first appreciation for the eldritch in fiction. It helps that it's very gay

@ami_angelwings says I can't use Jim Lee as a work for #FavWorkJ. Flipped a coin and this won. I have played several games in this series and I like them because they all play differently. Jak & Daxter series is my #FavWorkJ. Jak II is my personal favorite.

The Jeeves series by P.G. Wodehouse. A series about the world's smartest butler solving problems should be boring, which is the genius of it: it's never been about Jeeves or Bertie, it's about rich idiots getting themselves in deep, humour with victims no one really cares about. The elegant simplicity of Britain's smartest man gently, subtly trying to redeem its least awful rich one.
@ami_angelwings I went back and forth on this before a third option completely overshadowed the two I was debating between. Jim Lee's X-Men got me reading Marvel again after a long break. I followed him when he started Wildstorm and still admire his style to this day.
For #FavWorkAtoZ , my #FavWorkJ can only be "Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors"!
It's from my teenage years. I loved it then, now it's nostalgia.
A 1980's science-fantasy cartoon show, made to sell toys. Jayce and his friends are fighting... transforming plants. Yes, you read that right. Jayce's father tried to create a plant that would end hunger in the universe. But the plants were irradiated by an exploding star nearby, and mutated into the evil Monster Minds. The Monster Minds can transform into vehicles and their giant vines destroy entire planets!
Enter Jayce. He's got one half of a magic root, his father has the other, and uniting them is the only thing that can stop the Monster Minds. (It's never quite explained how or why, we're supposed to take it at face value). This sends Jayce and his friends on a 65-episode McGuffin hunt.
The premise is original, if somewhat weird. In the 1980's we had cartoons with vehicles transforming into battle robots, with vehicles transforming into combat vehicles, we had a few cartoons about hunting ghosts... but sentient plants becoming motorized war machines? That was a new one.
And there's the cast. Though strongly inspired by Star Wars, Jayce's friends have a character of their own. His timid sidekick Oon, an animated piece of armor. Flora, an 8-year old girl created from a plant, who can speak with plants and animals, and can sense the presence of the Monster Minds. Gillian, a millenia-old wizard who serves as the wise old man. And of course Han So.. I mean Herc Stormsailor, mercenary space captain, whose services Jayce hires. It's something of a running gag that Herc won't get paid until Jayce's father has been found, so he is always looking for other ways of acquiring wealth - and failing.
Oh, and several episodes were written by JMS himself!
@ami_angelwings The Incredible Machine. We TIM2, and it was my favourite puzzle game. I remember completing the entire thing twice after we had to reinstall it for whatever reason. I should play it again.
@ami_angelwings I don’t have a strong answer, but The Jetsons was one of those mainstays of my childhood. Though it’s been so long since I saw it I don’t really remember any specific episodes. I should re-watch it.
my #FavWorkJ is Justice League, the animated series
you can throw Justice League Unlimited in there since it's the same series, but I think Unlimited got into some weird territory it wasn't willing to fully explore with whether or not our superheroes are fascists, and it also had that annoying Batman Beyond retcon, and the unnecessary third season that, while fun, felt kind of like pointless fan service
but I really enjoyed the first 2 seasons, however choppy the first season could be... just finally, a real actual Justice League animated series, and Wonder Woman is there!
Yeah they often didn't seem to know what to do with her but she's great. Batman dominated the show at times but every character got a chance to shine, & it made John Stewart a household name
@ami_angelwings On balance, #JudgeDredd. I can be anything from wacky comedy to dark, gritty violence, but at its core it's one of the few comics to properly grok #ACAB. Yes, there are sadistic and aggressive judges, but they tend to be dealt with quickly and effectively. Dredd himself is Lawful Neutral - he enforces the law equally, regardless of race, species, or class. Since he isn't a *villain*, the comic gets to show that the judge system itself is the problem.
1/3
@ami_angelwings (the) Jimi Hendrix Experience. He wasn’t exactly a perfect human (sure the drugs didn’t help) but those albums and concerts changed music in such a fundamental way.
His rendition of Killing Floor with Redding and Mitchel is one of the most kick your teeth in pieces of music ever recorded. So so much goes back to that band, so many were inspired by that music.
(The) Jimi Hendrix Experience. Go have a listen.
@ami_angelwings My pick for #FavWorkJ is at least in part because there aren't a whole lot of options in my librarry, as it turns out. Albums? Individual songs? "J" titles are thin on the ground.
But the first John Wick movie is still a banger, regardless of sequels and spinoffs and attempted copies. It's a whole mythology unto itself. A more violent movie than I normally enjoy, but it's just so compelling to watch, dagnabbit.

Icon by Dwayne McDuffie for Milestone comics. Later renamed Icon and Rocket, and we're talking volume 1 here, not that crappy reboot Reggie Hudlin did in 2021. It's the Black generation gap from shows like the Fresh Prince but for cape comics, complete with unflinching focus on class divides, poverty, teen pregnancy and much, much more.
@ami_angelwings Since there's no time limit, I'd like to say Empowered. It started off as a series of superhero-themed bondage pinups which Adam Warren attached little stories to, and this expanded into a hilarious yet genuinely heartbreaking, sometimes terrifying yet always inspiring story about broken people trying to do their best in life that is usually against them.
And Warren is posting the entire thing online to read for free: https://www.empoweredcomic.com/
I almost picked Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san for #FavWorkI which is a yuri about cat and dog lesbians and is very cute but then I remembered what absolutely is my favourite work that begins with I, with apologies to the petsbians.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is the best Indiana Jones video game ever and in my mind, the best point and click adventure game ever.
Just extremely fun, allows you to solve puzzles in multiple ways, multiple paths, allows you to play with Sophia Hapgood as a team, or you can just fight your way through Nazis. Lots of clever puzzles. Some stuff is randomized, allowing for multiple playthroughs even through the same path.
Amazing music, and great sets. The intro doubles as a tutorial and also you revisit it later. Very clever.
Yeah whatever, for #FavWorkH I'm taking Hen: Strange Love. Don't judge me. It used to be unique for Yuri where the girls get together at the end okay.
Yeah it's super horny and booby but it is also gay.
tl;dr super popular and very booby girl is also a sex worker and has every guy wrapped around her finger but she's always unhappy with them. Enter new girl who is the total opposite and popular girl HATES her, so she thinks, cuz why else can't she get her out of her mind? Look at that bitch eating crackers amirite? Just can't stop eating them with her beautiful lips... wait what
Anyway lots of drama and stuff and then at the end they go to get married in America because surely 90s USA is progressive enough to have gay marriage right? It's so preciously naive, I can't hate

"Inubaka", paws down!
This may not go over well with the catgirls here 😉 , because #Inubaka is a manga for people who love #dogs.
18-year old #Suguri is the "baka" in the title. She's fond of dogs, and dogs are fond of her. She's not the brightest person around (hence the "baka"), but what she lacks in brainpower is more than compensated by her golden heart.
In the first volume, Suguri becomes a trainee at a pet store named Woofles. As the name suggests, Woofles specializes in dogs. They sell purebred puppies and everything you need to take care of your four-pawed family member. Woofles' manager is a young man named Teppei, and when he teaches Suguri about dogs and dog care, we learn along with her. It's a standard pattern for an educational series and it works well.
(I should point out that although the manga is instructive, if you are serious about getting a dog you should find more professional materials to inform yourself.)
The main attraction of this manga is, of course, the dogs. They are drawn amazingly well. Pure four-pawed eye candy.
The stories are slice-of-life, some lighthearted and others more serious.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the fan service. The author, Yukiya #Sakuragi, does not shy away from showing her female characters in revealing outfits and suggestive poses. This puts the series firmly in the "Older Teen" category (16+). Which is a pity, because it could have worked for a younger audience.
If you want a manga with gorgeously drawn dogs, Inubaka got you covered! Woof!! 🐾 🐕
