  1. New blog post time!

This week's game is Samurai Sword, Capcom's first foray into the adventure genre. You can see some neat ideas like combat scenarios and a swordsman/mage dynamic that's used to solve puzzles, but extremely obtuse progression and a lacking story really hold it back:

  6. Super Mario Brothers 2: For Super Players (Japan) – 40 Years

This might be an unexpected post considering this game’s place in the lore of Nintendo fandom, but this past June 3rd was the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Brothers 2! No, not the one with Birdo, Wart, and Mouser, but rather, the game people think is atrocious because of a slightly different colored mushroom, wind, and green trampolines. Yes, this week culminated in the 40th anniversary of the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2, which, yes, has the subtitle “For Super Players” in […]

  11. New blog post time!

This week's game is Lutter, an ambitious Famicom Disk System exclusive that combines the bump combat of Hydlide, level design that resembles Lode Runner, and the puzzle solving + inventory management of The Castle. It sounds ridiculous, but it really does work!

  16. CW: TLDW / Spoiler

The #FamicomDiskSystem, which Metroid was first coded for, had an additional sound chip which Metroid used, so when it was ported to the NES sound processing had to be done in the frame time which lags more frames.

  28. Learned about Atlus's first ever game (as a shadow developer for Imagineer) was a Famicom Disk System game called Ginga Denshou with hilariously extra packaging to go full multimedia experience. A giant box called a Wavejack box containing:

    • A 144 page manual with a lengthy novella establishing the world, setting, and plot of the game.
    • A cassette with an audio drama set in the world of the game.
    • A 12 page pamphlet on the educational principals underlying Imagineer's games.
    • A Ginga Denshou sticker.
    • An advertisement for the Ginga Denshou soundtrack, which was all original music not in the game.
    • A styrofoam block containing a regular FDS game box with the game in it.

The game had puzzles in an alien language that could only be solved by cross referencing the manual and audio drama. All of this extra packaging and material made the game cost twice as much as a regular FDS game of the time.

Just... always amazed by absurdly ambitious multimedia project energy whenever I encounter it. :ac_laughter:
