Getting an SNES back in May was the last piece of my new retro collecting roadmap. It also created a bit of an organizational snag. My Retro Room has five shelving units. Two of them house my original PlayStation library (which is over 1,100 discs!). One is for my original Xbox non-sports games. The other two were designated for NES, SNES, and Genesis. Wer in diesen ruhigen Tagen zwischen Weihnachten und Neujahr etwas Zeit übrig hat und sich für Videospielgeschichte interessiert, sollte sich dieses Projekt nicht entgehen lassen: The Video Game History Foundation hat eine neue umfangreiche Dokumentation veröffentlicht, die sich der „ungeschriebenen Geschichte des Nintendo Entertainment Systems“ widmet.
Die rund 45-minütige Doku beleuchtet den entscheidenden Abschnitt der Videospielhistorie, in dem Nintendo mit dem NES den westlichen Markt betrat – zu einer Zeit, in der die Branche nach dem großen Videospiel-Crash schwer angeschlagen war. Trotz großer Risiken brachte Nintendo das System auf den Markt, schuf damit einen weltweiten Erfolg und legte den Grundstein für die moderne Gaming-Industrie.
Der Begriff „Videospielmarkt-Crash“ bezieht sich hauptsächlich auf den großen Zusammenbruch der Videospielindustrie in den USA um 1983-1985, der durch eine Übersättigung des Marktes mit minderwertigen Spielen, den Aufstieg von Heimcomputern und schlechte Geschäftspraktiken verursacht wurde. Dieser Crash führte zum Bankrott vieler Unternehmen und einer Marktstagnation, bis Nintendo mit dem Nintendo Entertainment System und Super Mario Bros. den Markt wieder belebte. Heute gibt es immer wieder Diskussionen über einen möglichen neuen Crash, ausgelöst durch hohe Entwicklungskosten und eine sich wandelnde Gaming-Landschaft, aber die Marktdynamik ist komplexer geworden, mit starken japanischen und zunehmend auch mobilen Einflüssen.
Mehr als nur bekannte Fakten
Zwar ist die Erfolgsgeschichte des NES weithin bekannt, doch die Dokumentation geht deutlich weiter und konzentriert sich auf:
- die Entstehungsphase und Planungsprozesse vor dem westlichen Launch
- interne Entscheidungen und Herausforderungen
- Hintergründe, die bislang selten oder gar nicht öffentlich erzählt wurden
