As a former Kiwi myself, one old enough to have had a wall chart following Mike Thackwell on my classroom wall, I have to spare a thought for Liam Lawson as well.
It was clear from testing that there's a lot of pace in Red Bull's car, but that it also has a very narrow operating window and is a real handful outside of that window. Max will always find a way to wring its neck, but for mere mortals it is not so easy and Liam hasn't looked on top of the car all weekend. Like Bearman, he needs to take it on the chin and keep working with the engineers to understand the car and tailor his driving style towards its strengths.

Rookie report pt 2:
Antonelli - Going from FREC to F1 in two years was always going to be a massive ask of the teenager, so a messy weekend was hardly unexpected. He seemed on top of the car by P3, but I would've liked to have seen a glimpse or two of the incredible pace I've heard whispers of.
Bearman - Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. His big crash in P1 was unfortunate and losinng P2 was always going to seriously harm the rest of his weekend. He should have been conservative in P3 and concentrated on getting laps in. Binning it on lap two was the worst thing he could've done. In comparison, the gearbox failure is small fry as he would have been last by some distance in any case. He now faces the prospect of starting a Grand Prix at a track he's only managed 14 laps of. He just needs to play it safe, stay out of trouble and treat it as an extended familiarisation exercise, now.

Thoughts on the rookies:
Hadjar - Being so close to Tsunoda's pace already is very impressive. Isack was not the steadiest or most consistent of drivers in F2, but to miss out on Q3 by such a fine margin is a great start to life in F1.
Bortoleto - I would've put money on old hand Hulkenberg outqualifying him today, so that's a real feather in his cap. Like Hadjar, he's compared well with his far more experienced teammate well all weekend.
Doohan - His long association with Alpine and late debut next year have enabled him to hit the ground running and he was right on Gasly's pace throughout practice. Drove a strong lap to beat Gasly's Q1 time, but a scruffy Q2 will take the shine off things a little. Jack looks like he deserves to be in F1, but he'll need to make himself undroppable if he wants to keep his seat for the whole season.

Thoughts from the first proper session of 2025:
McLaren are clearly very quick, but I have a feeling that Ferrari will bring the fight to them after 6-8 races once they've adapted to their new front suspension setup. If Lando wants to win the championship, he needs to seize the initiative now and win these early races, like Button did in 2009. He can't afford to lose ground to Piastri or Verstappen.
Ferrari clearly have a way to go in understanding that car, but its pace in testing, practice and Q1 is real. Hamilton will be pleased that he was only two tenths off Leclerc during his first run in anger.
