I've seen theories that the rise in fascist rhetoric and extremism on the right in America is the result of an Extinction burst; that they know they're going the way of the dinosaur and are lashing out as a result.
There are a couple of problems with this, mainly that it:
1: Enables inaction, convincing people that "oh they're on the way out anyways, we just have to wait"
2: Implies that loss of popular support for the right will inherently translate to loss of political power. Fascists do not operate that way.
3: Glosses over the actual harm being done by the supposed "burst" where real people are losing rights and even their lives.
A rise in fascism is a rise in fascism, we cannot treat things differently based on a predicted trend. Ideas like an Extinction Burst only really hold water in hindsight.
