  5. A quotation from Ben Franklin

Honest Men often go to Law for their Right; when Wise Men would sit down with the Wrong, supposing the first Loss least. In some Countries the Course of the Courts is so tedious, and the Expence so high, that the Remedy, Justice, is worse than, Injustice, the Disease. In my Travels I once saw a Sign call’d The Two Men at Law; One of them was painted on one Side, in a melancholy Posture, all in Rags, with this Scroll, I have lost my Cause. The other was drawn capering for Joy, on the other Side, with these Words, I have gain’d my Suit; but he was stark naked.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) American statesman, scientist, philosopher, aphorist
    Poor Richard (1742 ed.)

Wiha - great drivers & bits. Love 'em. Well-machined, good tough tool #steel.

But their needlenose pliers? Rubbish. I have a set of full-sized needlenose, plus their "micro" set. With both of them there's too much slop in the joint, so the jaws are never quite aligned. I don't recall if they were bad right out of the packaging, but I certainly noticed it within the first handful of usages. I have the full sized "standard" / linesman-type pliers as well, but you don't tend to notice slop because of the much shorter jaws.

  8. On AI Coding Tools and why Freemium Apps Still Have a Future

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nine to Five Mac wrote an article about "AI coding tools may be the end of freemium utility apps". If the last three weeks are any indication of whether AI written apps can replace freemium apps the answer is both yes and no.

    The Yes Illusion

Let's start with the illusion that AI can vibe code your app. If you're doing something like a task list or snake, or similar then the answer might be yes, to some degree but in that case it requires preparation.

If you listen to discussions they speak about spec driven AI design, rather than plain vibe coding. The idea is that if you start with "I want to do this in that language" it might give you plenty of lines of codee that need to be checked. If you give it parameters, and specifications then that code is written according to specific rules so that it fits within the rules.

Testability is also key. Code might be written but you need it to be tested and vetted for security, edge case issues and more. It might work well in context A but not context B.

In essence if you want to write your own app, instead of going for a freemium app you need to spend time thinking of what you want to achieve.

    The 'No' Reality

    Understanding the environment

The more familiar you are with unix and open source, the more at an advantage you are when experimenting with building your own apps. You can tell the AI model which tech to use, as well as ask it to find a more efficient tool. It might suggest one tool that is fine for a dozen images for example, but slow when dealing with tens of thousands, as I have found.

Having the Time for Iteration and Understanding Your Goal

It's good to have time to experiment and iterate until you get a tool to do what you want it to do, without AI distracting you. It often helps you with step 1 but immediately wants to jump to step 2. It also has a tendency to confuse contexts, and in so doing confuses us. It's worth being aware of this.

Writing your own app requires investing the time to ensure that it works as intended.

    And Finally

Since Instagram was sold to Facebook I saw no reason to keep using it so years ago I created this clone adding function after function until I had cloned instagram functionality with a few kilobytes of PHP. If I added the ability to add new photos, and a way to log in and authenticate, then it would be a full success, rather than partial.

Replacing Photosweeper with a home grown solution might take quite a bit more effort. That's what I am experimenting with now.

  10. The postbac I am mentoring has thus far applied to a 18 PhD programs (a reasonable precaution right now), 13 of which have fees for a total cost of $1,001 (AVG = 77±20, max=105, min=30). I know the numbers because, as part of the position, I committed to paying these fees out of unrestricted funds. It's a good thing, too, because as a 1st gen student, this many applications would be totally unaffordable.

    Unsurprising & an extra stressor.

  19. @shockwaver

Forgive me for being Devil's Advocate for a moment...

The major difference between these cases is whether a given #public #service benefits the public as a whole (not "each individual separately, but all of them") or if they benefit the #individual(s).

Military or police spending? That's benefiting #society as a whole - you can't really say "Hey, Fred used a whole lot of police last year and cost me $X" (though some people try). It's even dafter in the military case.

But the post office ... well, if Fred sells and sends out 10,000 #tchotchkes at public #expense, he individually is solely benefiting from that, and the rest of us are picking up the tab. Or if some fundamentalist religious group decides to send "Chick tracts" to every household in Canada, should the #taxpayer really be picking up the #millions of dollars that those bible-thumpers cost everyone?

It's a tricky issue; there is no good solution.

But it pisses me off that they still aren't doing the *obvious* stuff to save money. For many years it's been bloody #obvious that eliminating legacy home delivery, installing community mailboxes for those just like every house built since the mid-80s, would save huge amounts of money.

And they still haven't done it, because the #politicians are afraid it'll cost them a few #seniors' votes.

    #ChickTract #BibleThumper #PostOffice

  20. Alternative definition of #Capitalism:

The #state sanctioned #embezzlement from our progeny of the natural resources presently entrusted to us.

Think about it. The #Econ 101 definition of #profit can be summarized by unit of production as the amount the public is willing to #pay, less the #expense of production. Simple, right?

    Wrong.

Because "production" always produces things (called negative externalities) that impact the purchasing #public long after production, that simply don't get counted as an expense of production. #Heat. #CO2. #Refuse. #Toxins. #Depression. Etc. You will never see these expenses of production on the product label, because those things, are the "profit" we ALLOW the capitalists to pocket.

Now, in the past, we thought this was ok because we didn't understand the #relationship between the capitalist "economy" and the law of #conservation of #energy. We failed to understand we're working within a closed system. Any physicist worth a shit sees the #insanity of this system today.

That's the root of this #toot: kolektiva.social/@LeftistLawye. The time of not #accounting for the real #costs of capitalism is done. Every year we continue to allow this reckless system to persist, we #embezzle the #resources of our children's future. It's an antiquated, and profoundly dangerous, arguably criminal, #economic #system

  21. Goldman Sachs: AI Is Overhyped, Wildly Expensive, and Unreliable

    Link
    📌Summary:
Goldman Sachs, one of the largest investment banks in the world, published a research paper expressing doubts about the economic viability of generative AI. The paper notes that there is "little to show for" the huge spending on generative AI infrastructure and questions whether this spending will ever pay off in terms of AI benefits and returns. The paper suggests that AI optimism is driving large growth in stocks like Nvidia and other S&P 500 companies, but argues that the stock price gains are based on the assumption that generative AI will lead to higher productivity and efficiency. The paper also suggests that companies are acting like generative AI is going to change the world, but that the technology is currently deeply unreliable and may not change much of anything at all.

    🎯Key Points:
    - Goldman Sachs questions the economic viability of generative AI.
    - The bank notes that there is "little to show for" the huge spending on generative AI infrastructure and wonders whether it will ever pay off.
    - The paper is based on a series of interviews with Goldman Sachs economists and researchers, MIT professor Daron Acemoglu, and infrastructure experts.

    - The bank suggests that the stock price gains are based on the assumption that generative AI will lead to higher productivity and efficiency.
    - The paper argues that generative AI is currently deeply unreliable and may not change much of anything at all.
    - The bank expresses skepticism about both the cost of generative AI and its ultimate transformative potential.
