Ooh that's kind of slippery as so much involves the discovery complexity of magical realism and (potential false) memory recall. The characters are manipulators who prefer delusion. They have dreams.

I feel they are tricky and yet necessary for my style of storytelling.

Colbie doesn't see it as giving up but rather escaping lost causes because her world is full of manipulators who enjoy playing games to avoid accountability and she's a serious person.

#Wordweavers 27 - At what point during the writing of your WIP do you know what the last line is going to be?

I'm not as picky about the specific last line. Words are trivial compared to the dynamic emotional complexity from deceptive manipulators.

I prefer the last chapter phase to call into question a significant motivation and characterization twist that throws attention back to an earlier part of the book. The signs were there, the truth was not.

#Wordweavers Oct 14 - What's your characters' relationship to spooky things?

There is annoyance. The spooky commercialization vibe feels cheap compared to the deep macabre of tragic suffering that is allowed to occur in society and what has become the expected normal of the human condition. Confrontation of the deeper angst that most suffering could be limited or eliminated is an ongoing theme.
