Updated Thu, July 31st 2025 at 6:28 AMPORTLAND (WGME) -- "An Old Orchard Beach police officer was arrested by ICE in Biddeford Friday.
"Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security doubled down on their criticism of the police department for hiring a person they say wasn't allowed to work in the U.S.
"Old Orchard Beach officials say they are disappointed, not only in the way their department is being criticized, but also in the lack of communication from #DHS and being criticized for using the federal government’s e-verification system."

The measure, which needs a majority to pass, is called the Secure the #Border Act. Along w/the #policing provisions, it’d also increase #prison sentences for anyone who sells #fentanyl* that results in an #overdose death, & would make it a #state #crime for #undocumented workers to provide false info to the #EVerify screening system.

The contours of a possible deal mirror what #McCarthy & leadership aides had telegraphed earlier in the wk as one route to keep the government funded for a short time: an extension of current fiscal levels for 1 month that includes funding for #DisasterRelief & #border #security. Specifically, #Republicans want to tack on the border security package they passed earlier this year, but w/o controversial provisions on #EVerify…. That route also would allow the blocked #DOD #funding bill to advance.
