  2. Montenegro is approaching EU membership. Serbia may try to stop it.

Montenegro leads the EU accession race, but Serbia may try to spoil the process to protect Belgrade’s regional influence and avoid awkward questions about its own progress, officials tell Euronews.

  5. How Canada’s turn toward Europe might test the EU’s borders.

The boundaries of the EU are inevitably informed by geography – but Canada, which shares the EU’s values and its vision of the world order, could challenge the bloc’s limits and open the door to a new form of association with Brussels.

  6. Icelanders vote in a tight referendum on restarting EU membership talks.

Iceland will vote today in a tight referendum on whether to reopen membership negotiations with the European Union.

  8. Iceland holds a knife-edge referendum on EU membership talks - and it could be decided on fish.

On Saturday, voters in this island nation of almost 400 000 people will decide whether their country should resume talks on joining the EU, amid economic and geopolitical tensions.

It is a referendum that polls suggest is too close to call.

  11. Fish over Trump: The economy will determine Iceland’s vote on EU membership.

While Arctic security and US claims over Greenland dominate international headlines, Icelanders are set to decide their European future on far more familiar grounds such as fish and farming.

The 29 August referendum is less about geopolitics than sovereignty and identity.

Today is Mega-Monday for EU enlargement.

First, Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since the decision to start EU accession negotiations in 2023.

We will also close two more chapters with Montenegro, bringing it close to half of all chapters closed.

  28. The European Union is open to Georgia becoming a member, the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Thursday, but warned Tbilisi needed to implement sweeping reforms to get candidate status.

The EU recognised Georgia's "European perspective" last year but deferred its membership application, while granting candidacy to Ukraine and Moldova, arguing Tbilisi needed to make changes first.
