  7. Why did we make the UHK compact and split? Because we believe in the power of the home row.

True typing efficiency means your fingers never have to leave the center keys. By bringing the keys and modules to your fingertips, we eliminate unnecessary reaching.

Stay centered, reduce strain, and experience the keyboard the way it was meant to be used. 🧘‍♂️

  8. Ergonomic keyboards don’t really have a “learning curve” — they have a learning cliff. 🤯

At first, your fingers act like they’ve never met each other before, and every sentence feels like it requires a group meeting to type.

But then something weird happens. The chaos slows down, the movements start to make sense, and one day you realize you’re not thinking about typing anymore — you’re just doing it.

That’s the moment there’s no going back.

  9. Who is the UHK 80 for?

For people who think 100% keyboards waste space.
For people who think 60% keyboards aren't quite enough.
For people who want arrows, function keys, and a mouse that's just a little farther away.

The UHK 80 hits the sweet spot: compact enough to free up desk space, complete enough to keep your workflow flowing.

Because sometimes the best keyboard isn't smaller. It's smarter.

  11. Some things are great on their own. Together, they’re even better.

⚡ Layers + Key Clusters: shortcuts where your thumbs want them.
⚡ UHK 80 + Keyboard Risers: better angle, better comfort.
⚡ UHK 60 + UHK Touchpad: less desk space, less hand travel.

  21. In hindsight, if I had bought the 32-key #FishKeyboard and learnt the #OnishiLayout my #ErgonomicKeyboard journey would have been a bit different.

Instead I’m designing my own 32-key #MechanicalKeyboard(s), learnt #HandsDownPromethium, and am learning the #NaginataStyle Japanese kana #KeyboardLayout.

    Maybe not that different?

  23. Comfort over long hours starts with the right setup. ⏳

Using the UHK Riser, high degree tenting allows your hands and forearms to rest in a more natural, neutral position. By reducing forearm rotation and minimizing wrist deviation, it helps ease physical stress, supports healthier posture, and lowers fatigue during extended typing sessions.

Stay comfortable, stay focused, and keep going longer. 🎯

  25. Regular keyboards are familiar and easy to use, but often push hands inward ⚠️.

Split keyboards separate the halves, for natural arm/wrist alignment and better comfort. Customizable to fit your style.✨

Different needs call for different solutions — UHK is giving you both worlds.

  27. @flub
IIRC, they said having LEDs anywhere else than under the keycaps would have made the keyboard even bulkier than the keywells already force it to be. I found that argument convincing.

Also, in using a Glove80 as my daily driver for several years (since the Kickstarter), I can say I don't miss the LEDs at all. YMMV, of course.

  35. After designing alternative PCBs for existing #ErgonomicKeyboard designs, designing my own keyboard from scratch was a logical next step that #Ergogen makes surprisingly easy. The case will be harder… ⌨️

Once (or if?) I get this #MechanicalKeyboard stuff out of my system, there are various software projects where my free time could be well spent 😅

  37. My third #MechanicalKeyboard has arrived from #JLCPLC - a split Forager #ErgonomicKeyboard where I’ve designed an alternative “Acid” PCB without diodes, but with a bigger battery cutout & a power switch. The top case was meant to be transparent too, not white - oops.

  39. This bad boy arrived after over a year’s wait. The first impression is superb, and I’m already enjoying the grind of the first ridge of the learning curve.

  40. Unsure if I've even mentioned this anywhere before,

but I've maintain a "Steam Curator" page for the last few years, keeping a log of how well games handle custom keyboard layouts - feel free to follow it if you want to see a note on Steam Store pages telling you whether a game's keybind settings are up-to-snuff:

  42. This #MechanicalKeyboard idea was inspired by designs like the Grin layout kbd.news/Grin-layout-1348.html and Smile36 github.com/protieusz/Smile36-P but with a kanata-like symmetrical stagger to try to be more of an #ErgonomicKeyboard. See kbd.news/RominRonin-and-his-sy for a nice write-up of various symmetric row-staggered layouts

  44. I'm still having fun with #MechanicalKeyboard designs - not sure if it would count as an #ErgonomicKeyboard but the #Ergogen version of this curly 45-key split keyboard design is looking good! Enough keys for all the letters and punctuation (but not numbers and navigation keys without using layers).

I was asked to add it as an Ergogen example github.com/ergogen/ergogen-gui

  46. Incidentally, the PCB for this new #MechanicalKeyboard was going to be red with a lead-free finish, but #JLCPLC charge a premium for that combination due to low demand. Maybe I should have gone for red anyway as this will only be used in a case, but I opted for blue with the silkscreen art in white this time. This is a reversible alternative PCB for the Forager #ErgonomicKeyboard

  47. I've designed and sent off my third #MechanicalKeyboard PCB for fabrication astrobeano.blogspot.com/2025/1 - This time its a 34-key wireless split "Forager" #ErgonomicKeyboard, but with my own diode-free Graph Theory wiring & space for a larger battery. 🪫

Meanwhile the second design (a wireless monoblock) has arrived and awaits soldering & assembly. A shame the Dundee #MakerSpace isn't currently available 😢

  48. When I started using a split keyboard, I noticed the comfortable distance between the halves drifted further apart until my arms came forward straight from signs.

Now years later I tried using a more traditional design with my arms angled toward the center again. I noticed my back hurt by the end of the day.

I’m not if there’s some optimal arm angle but I’ve adapted to my heavily split design. For tall folk with broader shoulders it’s nice to have this option.

    #keyboard #ErgonomicKeyboard

  49. The sticker surgery to update the labels to match my revised #HandsDownPromethium layout variation went as well as expected. This now matches my #ErgonomicKeyboard (which has blank keycaps).

The stickers do come off pretty cleanly, fingernails are safer if you can get traction - forceps can scratch, and the black coating on the Apple underglow key caps is surprisingly thin.

Comma and period are now semicolon and colon when shifted, needing spliced stickers.

The right index finger top key with the “<“ label is now backspace like #NaginataStyle - rather unusual in the English focused #KeyboardLayout world.

My #ZMK config is at github.com/peterjc/zmk-config and the #KarabinerElements version for the laptop at codeberg.org/peterjc/kana-chor

  50. I think I will be fine turning my #ErgonomicKeyboard layout from 36 keys (split 3x5_3 if that means anything to you) to work with 34 keys (3x5_2), dropping a thumb key on each side a la Ferris, or the more recent Forager.

Of course, lovely as the Forager is, it would be more satisfying building it with my own no-diode PCB design - an excuse to try the tiny #XiaoController: github.com/carrefinho/forager/

This would be my first time writing #ZMK firmware for a Bluetooth #SplitKeyboard #MechanicalKeyboard
