  1. This Startup’s AI Designs Enzymes That Can Eat Plastic Waste

In a lab tucked away in an old gun factory in New Haven, Connecticut, a machine heated plastic waste to 536 degrees Fahrenheit and spat out gloopy strings of material that start to harden when they hit the air. This substance made of textiles and post-industrial scrap that were destined for a landfill will be ground to bits to create as much surface area as possible. Landfills are overflowing with plastic trash. Serial inventor Jonathan Rothberg’s Protein Evolution found a solution: using […]

  3. The battle over peat: why do some gardeners still insist on using it?
    By Rachel Dixon

Peat bogs are essential to the environment, holding twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests. But in the UK, 80% are damaged, most of what is extracted is used in horticulture – and some campaigners fear the problem is getting worse

#Uranium Ore Truck Collision Endangered #Navajos near #Shonto on #NavajoNation

    May 11, 2026, via @bsnorrell.blogspot.com

"A uranium ore haul truck traveling from a uranium mine in the Havasupai's homeland in the Grand Canyon, to a mill site in the White Mesa Ute's community in Utah, was struck by a vehicle, which exposes the danger from the #radioactive haul trucks covered only with tarps. The trucks travel from #EnergyFuels #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine in the #GrandCanyon, from #Havasupai ancestral land, through #Flagstaff, and across #Navajo and #Hopi lands before reaching Energy Fuels mill site on Ute ancestral land in #Utah." -- Censored News

  5. Glenn Storhaug obituary

My friend Glenn Storhaug, who has died aged 78, was a poet, publisher and environmental campaigner. In the late 1970s he set up his own Five Seasons Press. Having taught himself typesetting, Glenn developed an enthusiasm for the American poets Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Wendell Berry, whose work he wished to promulgate. With the paper supplier John Purcell he was also instrumental in the development and production of a good quality recycled paper. Continue reading...

  6. #GatherTheFilm - "Gather is an intimate portrait of the growing movement amongst #NativeAmericans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through #FoodSovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide.

"Gather follows #NephiCraig, a chef from the #WhiteMountainApacheNation (#Arizona), opening an #IndigenousCafé as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a young scientist from the #CheyenneRiverSiouxNation (#SouthDakota), conducting landmark studies on #bison; and the #AncestralGuard, a group of #EnvironmentalActivists from the #YurokNation (Northern #California), trying to save the #KlamathRiver.

Gather is coming to Netflix in the US on November 1, 2021! Gather is now available to stream on iTunes (US/UK/Canada), Amazon (US/UK) and Vimeo-on-Demand (rest of the world)."

  7. #Greenpeace on Trial: $300M Lawsuit over #StandingRock #Protests Could Shutter Group & Chill #FreeSpeech

    #DemocracyNow, March 04, 2025

"A closely watched civil trial that began in #NorthDakota last week could bankrupt Greenpeace and chill #EnvironmentalActivism as the climate crisis continues to deepen. The multimillion-dollar lawsuit by #EnergyTransfer, the oil corporation behind the #DakotaAccessPipeline, claims Greenpeace organized the mass protests and encampment at Standing Rock between 2016 and 2017 aimed at stopping construction of the project.

"Although the uprising at Standing Rock was led by #Indigenous #WaterDefenders, Energy Transfer is instead going after Greenpeace for $300 million in damages — an amount that could effectively shutter the group’s U.S. operations. 'This case is not just an obvious and blatant erasure of #IndigenousLeadership, of #IndigenousResistance,' says Deepa Padmanabha, a senior legal adviser for #GreenpeaceUSA. 'It is an attack on the broader movement and all of our First Amendment rights to free speech and #PeacefulProtest.'"

Thousands of Serbians protest in Belgrade against #LithiumMine

Controversial mining project is a political fault line in #Balkan country over fears about #environmental impacts

    Agence France-Presse in Belgrade
    Sat 10 Aug 2024 18.14 EDT

"Thousands hit the streets in Serbia’s capital Belgrade Saturday to protest against the rebooting of a controversial lithium mine set to serve as a vital source to power Europe’s green energy transition.

"Before the rally, two leading protest figures said they were briefly detained by security officials who warned that any moves to block roads during the protest would be viewed as illegal.

"Thousands chanted 'Rio Tinto get out of Serbia' and 'You won’t dig' as they rallied in downtown Belgrade before setting off on a march through the city.

"Protesters later entered Belgrade’s main railway station where demonstrators blocked tracks, halting traffic.

"Serbia has vast lithium deposits near the western city of Loznica, where a mining project being developed by the Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto has been a perennial political fault line in the Balkan country in recent years over its potential environmental impacts.

"The deposits were discovered in 2004, but weeks of mass protests forced the government to halt the project in 2022."

  9. 23 years ago, Andrea Collins (nee Bertorelli), Phil Collins' 1st ex-wife, published a fundraising calendar to help save #SaltspringIsland from more #deforestation. Before she moved to Ireland, she spent many years on SSI, doing wildlife #photography, running an art gallery & being involved in #EnvironmentalActivism.

Howard Fry spent 3 decades as a commercial #photographer in #Vancouver. In 1998 he retired to Salt Spring & became embroiled in a battle to save part of the island from development.

Salt Spring Island residents may be laid back, but they are dead serious about their #trees. They organized a fundraising campaign to buy close to 2,000 acres & turn it into a park.

35 #women between 18 & 74, including high-profile residents such as Andrea Collins, ex-wife of rock star Phil Collins, Birgit Bateman, photographer & wife of Robert Bateman, author & #environmentalist Briony Penn (who also rode Lady Godiva-style through downtown Vancouver) appear tastefully naked in the calendar.

Fry shot all the beautiful #BlackAndWhitePhotos & retains copyright. #Calendar sales of $19.95/unit raised over $200,000 in 2001 & received widespread media attention.

The price tag for the land was $15.9 million. The islanders raised $1.5 million & the provincial, regional & federal governments kicked in the rest.
