Climate change is shaping a mindset revolution -- powerfully driving innovation and progress. And young people are leading the transformation. This @Flipboard Storyboard focuses on the roles of those born since 1989, when recognition of children’s rights and the spike of global temperatures began to intersect, curated by The Christian Science Monitor:

Over three years of Australian cave climate data
In 2020, members of the Australasian Cave and Karst Management Association (ACKMA) grouped together to set up a regional cave climate monitoring program. At the time, tourist caves were largely closed due to COVID-19, and a baseline study was envisaged.

Are you at an Australian beach or walking the coastline? Can you help collect citizen science data by taking a photo with your smartphone?
I'm sharing this article in the @theconversationau on behalf of my UNSW colleague Mitch Harley of CoastSnap fame.

Frequency of hailstorms increases by 40% around Sydney and Perth since 1979, research finds.
That's The Guardian headline. What does the paper say:
"statistically significant increases in annual hail-prone days on the southern parts of the east and west coasts, which cover several major Australian cities. Relative changes in cities in which increases were detected are up to ~10% per decade around Sydney, Perth and Canberra, and up to ~20% per decade around Hobart."
The Guardian article is here, and there's a link to the paper at the end. The paper is great, full of maps of hail trends in Australia. And for those interested, the detail of the method for how to estimate if hail has occurred when there is no one there to see it.

It is early spring, and 30% of the state of New South Wales is already in drought.
Drought is most intense along the north east coastal regions.
I work (and cave) in this region, and I am seeing farmers rapidly restocking and staghorn ferns falling from their host trees in the rainforest.

I was up in time to catch a foggy moonset.
And then it was a packed morning presenting our latest research to the state government groundwater team.
Firstly a tour of the new Critical Zone Observatory with Dr. Martin Andersen, and then a groundwater tour of Wellington Caves with Martin and Dr. Marilu Melo Zurita.
Thanks to Dubbo Regional Council for their support and cakes.

Science week is over here in Australia.
Over the past few days, I was taking part in Capricorn Caves 'Big Science Adventure'. Here are some photos:
Our research cave drip loggers were downloaded and we found out how much rain was needed for water to reach the caves.
A cave guides training session was held. By chance, we found a rare geomorphological feature - photokarren
And we had a stall explaining the caves climate, hydrology and geological history.

Lake George, near Canberra, is often dry. I travelled past it today, and it is full.
It is sometimes called a natural rain gauge, filling and drying with wet and dry periods.
It is better understood as a gauge of groundwater levels. When the water table is high, it reaches the land surface, and the lake appears.
So Lake George is full of water from the rise in groundwater after the wet La Nina years. But the surrounding landscape is dry.
In the field this week, I have seen no evidence of rainfall replenishment of groundwater in the last six months. Enjoy Lake George while the water is still there!

Have you ever wondered about what the temperature of a cave might be, and how it might change over time?
Back in 2020, the Australasian Cave and Karst Management Association established a monitoring program. Volunteers from many tourist caves collected data. We got a 'baseline' for cave climate during COVID closures.
And now, two years on, about half of the network is still collecting data. We can see if tour groups can warm up a cave through their body heat, and whether wildfires over the cave or flooding can affect the climate in the cave.
And all of the data can be explored here..

From my colleagues down the corridor at UNSW who have been collecting and analysing ear clips of dingoes and wild dogs
"Research suggests that more than half of Australia’s dingoes are genetically pure, not hybrids"
TL;DR they use a better DNA testing method, and find that Australia has four groups of pure dingos that have differences in DNA. Plus a group of dingo/dog mixed DNA. Now to find out if the differences in DNA lead to physical differences.

The #UNSW #earthscience teaching lab is all set up for start of term.
We have a new 'cave animal' poster on display for 2023 - this year it is the glow worm. Thanks to the 'Australian Cave Animal of the Year'. We have hundreds of free stickers for the students.
And an isotope analyser is analysing the #carbondioxide and #methane of the air in the lab. In a couple of weeks, students will be collecting air quality data from all over #sydney for their project.
