Te Tai Poutini/The West Coast is putting on a grand display at the moment of bright blue Smurf mushrooms/Werewere-Kokako/Entoloma hochstetteri.
OK, so "Smurf mushrooms" is not an official common name for these, but the species is very real and very blue.
Here are photos from the weekend at Rakaitane walk in Moana and Kelly's Creek in Arthur's Pass National Park.
It's a rare year that I see werewere-kokako mushrooms this abundant. What a treat!
