  1. My local Waitrose supermarket allows me to collect tokens every time I shop, to allocate to one of three local good causes. The charities change every quarter, at which point a first, second and third prize monetary amount is donated by Waitrose to the charities. This quarter, the charities include the local food bank and a dog rescue organisation.

Unbelievably and very sadly in my mind, the dog rescue charity is winning and the food bank is coming last. This seems wrong to me on at least two levels. Surely poor people who are struggling to feed themselves are a more worthy cause than homeless dogs, and what kind of country are we that needs food banks in the first place?

  2. William Apess, Methodist missionary, part Pequot, relates his message to Indians. He says not to work own crops is evil, but blames rum-sellers. Encourages organizing against white peddlers.

The olden liquor campaigns were more about social justice than spiritual poison. You CAN call for moral purity and justice in the same sentence. Christian missionary journals are a source of incisive records of injustice vs. indigenous.
