  1. Day 23, #ShittyCameraChallenge: Summer in the Garden, Philadelphia 2024

Emulsion lift on 6x6 watercolor paper, Sx-70 with Polaroid 600 Round Frame and diy ND filter.

  2. @BobHorowitz @moragperkins oooooo, well if interested, it’s easy to get started since all you really need is a bowl of hot water, some heavy paper, and maybe a pack of $0.99 watercolor brushes from the dollar store! 😅

  3. Tried emulsion lifts for the first time yesterday, i-Type film from the Polaroid Lab; maybe learned something, having a go at a few more now.

  4. @thereisnocat oh wait! But outside the museum on the same roll/day, we did it again because my Polaroid inside didn’t come out. She took this. And then my reverse shot did come out and made a great lift! One of my favorite ever! ❤️

  5. Hey #EmulsionLiftGang (and @moragperkins)

Let's say I'm insane enough to add another camera to my collection to add yet another niche photography and processing technique. Any recommendations?

  6. Carnival Ride, Little Amerricka, Merrill, WI

I figured out a new process for lifting onto mulberry paper!

    • I placed the wet paper onto a flat smooth surface (back of a cookie sheet in this case)
    • I positioned the image layer on it, trying to anticipate the degree to which it would spread out
    • And smoothed it with a gentle stream of tap water

This solved the problem of the paper being too delicate and flimsy to lift!

  7. Day 90, Shitty Camera Challenge: Found object (pew pew), Morris Arboretum, Philadelphia 2023

Sx-70 lift with 600 film and DIY ND filter. Had to reload dark slide and fiddle with the pack to get it to eject, hence the light leak.

The Morris arboretum has a play platform for kids high up above the forest floor. My daughter dropped a prized possession through the cracks to the ground below. While looking for it, I found this forlorn, lost storm trooper.

  8. We left Maine yesterday and are slamming back into regular life! At least I've got these four emulsion lift panoramas to remind me of a rejuvenating time away. 😢

There are things I wish I could do over in each image (and the lifting quality of the b&w definitely made an impact), but all in all I'm thrilled that they came together, and say different things about how people and land and water meet.

  9. …It was pretty easy to position this lift on the wood, and the texture works pretty well, but I’m not sure I love the look of the bare wood.

I think it would look really cool on some texture-y painted wood, like these plywood sheets painted with a white or light milkpaint, but that’s probably more work than I want to do??

The liquitex worked ok. It was harder than on a tintype and I rushed it a little. It could be smoother. 🤷‍♂️

  10. Prompted by @RevAndyK and his questions from the other day and then our ongoing #EmulsionLiftGang discussion, here is the result of an experiment:

An emulsion lift on 4x4 plywood, finished with Liquitex Varnish (3 coats).

I used a shot I wasn’t thrilled with of flowers in a field, and these small precut wood art boards from my local supply shop that are <$1…
