  1. #PennedPossibilities 1105: What secret does one of your characters keep that is dangerous to them? Does anyone else know about it?

I’ll go with the safe option for this answer.

Caden is a Dreamcaster. Simply put, he can send individuals to sleep and induce a dreamstate. He’s even able to influence and affect the dream if he so chooses. This is precious information, of course, and it’s a skill that he doesn't dare tell others that he possesses. It’s highly sought after, and it’s too dangerous to risk. Years ago, he was in a vampire cult and managed to escape them. They would use him if they knew.

Towards the beginning of the novel, he chooses to tell Fenella and Alistair. Well, I say *tell,* but what I really mean to say is that he *shows* them — of course, by putting both of them to sleep and making them dream. He’s dramatic that way. Anyway, he trusts this secret with them. They’re all such close friends. But the fact that he hid this piece of himself for centuries is mind-boggling to Fen and Alistair…

  2. #WordWeavers 8/19: Which character has changed the most since your first draft?

Hati has changed the most for me (and she's still changing). She has gone from what was supposed to be a friend to the MCs and merely a SC to almost a third MC at this point.

  3. #ScribesAndMakers 8/20: Create a poll describing two characters that feature in your stories and one who doesn't. Ask people to guess the one that isn't in your work.

We're strictly discussing Wings of Quiet Longing for this one, folks.

  4. #PennedPossibilities 1104: Where has your MC lived the longest? What kept them there for so long?

It’s Dorcha Castle in Moray, Scotland. In fact, he actually *still* resides there. Memories, loyalty, love, and friendship have all been the reasons why he stayed. It’s his home.

  5. #WordWeavers 8/18: What's your favorite line you've written this year?

What a tough question. How about this one:

The pupils weren’t just black, they were midnight fields, starless and infinite that swallowed distance and sound, leaving a weighted, eternal silence.

  6. #PennedPossibilities 1101: What creature or monster would your MC or SC love to keep as an unconventional pet? Why is that?

The answer to this one is quite simple. It’s been mentioned enough in the story already. It would have to be moths. As a matter of fact, Alastair actually keeps them as pets, cares for them, and has done this for years.

Bats aren’t important to vampires. That’s only folklore. It’s complete nonsense. Moths, however, are *very* symbolic.

  7. #PennedPossibilities 1100: Who is the most challenging opponent your MC has ever faced? What did they learn from them?

Alistair and Fenella have the same answer. It’s Isma. Duncan could be another possible one, only on a much lower tier, of course. And it’s more about what they learned *not* to do, how not to treat others, than it is about anything else. They saw the rottenness of mortals and immortals alike from that man (and Duncan as well). After all, they were all once mortals (AKA humans), and they shed their humanity like a snake sheds its skin. It’s disgusting.

  8. #WordWeavers 8/12: If your main character had a comfort food, what would it be?

The way I just laughed out loud.

Let's try warm, slightly tipsy, maybe blonde or brunette (he isn't picky), and dancing around the room with him.

In my universe, my vampire MC takes what he calls "sweet drinks" or "little sips," and his victims are none the wiser. They aren't injured at all and are only missing a few drops of blood.

  9. #PennedPossibilities 1099: SC POV: Describe the most beautiful sound you’ve ever heard.

Hati: It’s my husband’s laughter. Sam giggle-snorts sometimes. He just can’t seem to help himself, and it fills me with joy.

  10. #PennedPossibilities 1098: What is a relatively recent invention that dramatically changed the world in your WIP?

It’s almost 1890, but let’s look back at 1885. Karl Benz invented the first practical automobile (powered by an internal combustion engine), Gottlieb Daimler created the first gas-engine motorcycle, and John Kemp Starley demonstrated the Rover safety bicycle for the first time. These inventions all shaped modern personal transport.

The reason why I mentioned this is because I think my series will eventually (and way down the line) move into modern day.

  11. #PennedPossibilities 1096: MC POV: When was the last time you got lost?

Fenella: It was the moment I left Dorcha Castle. And yes, I do mean that in the poetic, emotional sense. I was lost for almost a decade. But I still found my way home.

  12. #PennedPossibilities 1095: Are any of your characters named after colors, food, or objects?

Not in this particular story of mine, no. But I have done that before. I love the process of conjuring up new names for various different tales. It's such a fun part of it all — even though it's just as frustrating at times, too.

  13. #PennedPossibilities 1094: Saturday Word Edition: Share something from your WIP pertaining to the word “sorrow.”

    (For @thatwriterellie.)

I’m just going to share a small excerpt that relates to this. I love Alistair and Fenella to bits. That is certainly no mystery by now, I’m sure.

    ⬇️

He coaxed the tiny, winged creature over with his palm facing down.

“I can’t exactly say why,” Fenella began, “but it reminds me of a line you wrote in one of your books.” She watched as the moth landed on his index finger. “He traveled on wings of quiet longing and endured for the sake of the girl. Life was—”

Their eyes met as he finished the sentence for her, “Worth the sorrow.”

In response, she made a soft sound. “It certainly sounded as if you were speaking from experience, Alistair. Was that the main character’s thoughts or yours?”

He huffed a quiet laugh. “It’s the mystery of writers. I’ll never tell anyone. That would spoil the fun, dear.”

  14. #ScribesAndMakers 8/8: Polymorphous?

Let's discuss shapeshifting and shifters. In my current WIP, we have "full shift werewolves," and I love writing them. There might even be others, but you'll learn as the series goes on. On another note, many people assume (because of fiction) that vampires can "shift" into bats. That's a lie. It's just fiction, and it's ridiculous as well. Alistair laughs whenever that's brought up in conversation.

  15. #WritersCoffeeClub 8/8: In your works, when the subaltern speaks, who listens?

This was an awesome prompt. I decided to use my current WIP for the answer.

Alistair does. The clever ones will. The wise. Those who work for Alistair listen as well, as does Hati.

But let's talk about Alistair for a minute here. He's the sort of man who has amassed friends because he's a kind-hearted man who helps those who so desperately need it. Out of the servants working in his household, a number of them were jobless and/or homeless years prior. He brought them on. It's for one very simple reason: he cares. And yes, he listens.

  16. #WordWeavers 8/8: Which character would survive a zombie apocalypse, and why?

This is a really interesting prompt. A good majority of the cast are immortal. So, for the purpose of this prompt, let's assume the zombie virus can also infect immortals as well. Also, this would be wild and crazy during the Victorian era. I like that idea.

I have two answers for this one, and people might not like either of them. My antagonists would survive. Number one, Isma immediately came to mind. He's so cunning and clever. He would manipulate the heck out of anyone around him, forming some sort of post-apocalyptic doomsday cult. He would definitely survive. Number two, we have Duncan. He's a survivor, and I do mean that in the worst possible way. He would do whatever it takes, kill whoever it takes, and would somehow stay alive. Just thinking about all of this gave me a shiver, not gonna lie.

  17. #PennedPossibilities 1093: Name something you love about your MC.

I’ll talk about both Alistair and Fenella for this one. When it comes to Alistair, it’s the fact that he’s an introverted writer, for the most part, and also an artist as well. We can all relate to that part of him. And yes, to relax, he loves to paint. For Fenella, it’s her attitude. She’s powerful. She stands up for women, for their rights, and for those who so desperately need it. She cares for mortals, and by being an immortal, she’s strong enough to help and save them, even if her idea of “helping” might not always be the best answer for some situations. (For example, she was murdering useless, disgusting, cheating men to save their women, either freshly betrothed or already married to them. At heart, she had good intentions.)

  18. #PennedPossibilities 1092½: Bonus Question (Courtesy of @AnnaSaultron): Quality Time: Your MC has the day off tomorrow, so what do they do?

If Alistair had the day (AKA the night) to himself, he would probably laze around and read, perhaps head into town and meet with Hati, and then go for a walk with her. Best friends always seem to clear your mind when you’re troubled, after all.

  19. #WritersCoffeeClub 8/7: What subcultures exist in your work?

I'll talk about my current WIP for this one. We have many different immortals within that main umbrella, and they all have their own cultures. It's interesting to both consider and then finally write down.

  20. #WordWeavers 8.6 — If your villain had to spend a day with your hero, what would happen?

Currently, Duncan is spending *a lot* of time with Alistair and Fenella. He's only one of the antagonists, but hey. He's actually living with them at the moment. So far, there isn't any scratching or biting, but we'll see.

  21. #PennedPossibilities 1091 — When not in person, how do people communicate? How has this method of communication affected the society in your world?

Let’s discuss immortals for this one. We already know how communication worked for mortals (AKA humans) during the tail end of the Victorian era. Telepathy might be used (if a vampire has the gift) or perhaps notes will be sent via ravens. If anything, it’s made life easier for immortals. Things were much harder for the mortals during this era, of course.

  22. #WordWeavers 8.4 — Which supporting character keeps trying to steal the spotlight?

Hati. It's always Hati. I think she's going to be the MC in Book 2. I absolutely adore this woman. At this point, she's *almost* a third MC for the book.

  23. #PennedPossibilities 1090 — What mystery has gone unsolved for as long as almost anyone can remember?

It’s the true identity of (who we now refer to as) Jack the Ripper, even if it’s only been a few years since the murderer prowled the streets of the Whitechapel District in London. Of course, if you’ve been following my posts about this story and the series, you might actually know who the Whitechapel Murderer was. I’ve alluded to it before. It was Duncan. Mortals have no idea, of course. Only a handful of immortals know as well. Alistair is one of them.

  24. #WordWeavers 8.3 — If your protagonist had a signature scent, what would it be?

(I'm an idiot. I read this as antagonist.)

Antagonists: Let's start with Duncan. He would smell like a deep, woodsy cologne. (When he's freshly bathed, that is.) Isma would no doubt smell like freshly turned earth or dirt. Like Death itself. That's quite a signature scent.

MCs: If Alistair had a scent, it would be something like tobacco, sandalwood, and hearth smoke. Masculine but muted. Enticing. Fenella smells like lavender and vanilla.

  25. #WordWeavers 8.2 — What's one scene you cut that you still think about?

It's a bit of the fight that happens between Duncan and Alistair. I might just save some of the tidbits for a later scene.
