  1. Toys'R'Us, still alive in Canada, is in trouble. "National chain once had 103 stores after billionaire Doug Putman bought and expanded the Canadian operations, but only 40 remain open."

  2. @Satori

A little shame might give them the slightest taste of what they're inflicting on others. So sorry you're still dealing with this.

  7. To warm up for my gig as a Heritage Festival entertainment judge, rewatching this fantastic video by my one-time Edmonton Journal colleague, Ryan Jackson. It so perfectly captures the magic of Edmonton and of the festival. I’ll shoot my own pictures and videos tomorrow. But they won’t come close to this. Click and I promise you’ll see something truly extraordinary. vimeo.com/136469731 #Edmonton #yeg #EdmontonJournal #HeritageFestival #dance #multicultural #multiculturalism #Canada

  8. #EdmontonJournal: "#Alberta must seize energy transition opportunity

In the last year, global economies have bet trillions on the #EnergyTransition. The billions of #CleanEnergy investments in #Canada’s recent budget was spurred by the half a trillion dollars delivered in the U.S.’s #InflationReductionAct, not to mention #Europe’s own multi-billion-euro #GreenDealIndustrialPlan. Meanwhile, jobs in clean energy surpassed those in #FossilFuels for the first time."

  13. @jasononthedrums the #EdmontonJournal cannot be called anything but a purveyor of garbage, comparable to the national inquirer. A #Postmedia property, it spews BS and whatever its handlers tell it to spew. Facts are irrelevant. The goal is manipulation. Sadly, many are prone to swallow the crap David “writes”, hook line and sinker. #CdnMedia is morphing into the #FilthEstate

  14. #EdmontonJournal: It's time for Alberta to get on board with passenger rail

#Alberta is heading into a generation-defining energy transition without a plan for low-carbon, intercity transportation.

As the #Edmonton-#Calgary corridor (population over 3.1 million) grows, it’s essential to provide an alternative to automobiles within and between the two metropolitan areas. #ElectricVehicles are not a panacea."

  15. For decades, Roger Levesque shone a spotlight on culture in our fair city, and wrote extensively about the Yardbird Suite and many of the artists who took our stage. He was an original Influencer long before social media airheads co-opted that term.

Whether in the Edmonton Journal, or on air at CKUA, or CJSR, or CBC, Roger shared his excitement for quality music and culture, but particularly jazz. Through his journalism he proved to be a vital cultural educator for a few generations of Albertans. He was important for my personal education in the arts, and I will remember him with the greatest love and respect.

Tom wrote a great article on Roger, published today

  16. One final Valentine's Day column. I wrote this in 2002, more than 20 years ago. It was the first piece I ever wrote that went "viral' - and people still stop me to talk to me about it. (You have to scroll past the Hobbit-y preamble to get to the archival Valentine's Day essay.) This goes out with love to my hairy-toed husband, still snuggly after all these years. edmontonjournal.com/news/local #ValentinesDay #ValentinesDay2023 #Tolkien #yeg #LOTR #LordoftheRings #hobbit #EdmontonJournal

  17. Continuing my indulgence in Valentine's Day nostalgia...here is a column I wrote in 2015, the first Valentine's Day that my husband and I were empty nesters - and thus able to have, um, marital relations (or go out for dinner) whenever we wanted. The question I asked - could the romance of Valentine's Day endure, in a life without limitations? pressreader.com/canada/edmonto #ValentinesDay #valentinesday2023 #Valentine #yeg #Edmonton #EdmontonJournal

  18. This week, we began second reading debate of Bill C-18, which would compel Google & Facebook, the two largest websites, which capture 80 % of Canadian ad revenues, to underwrite operating costs of Canadian newsrooms. I spent 30 years as a journalist. I am passionate saving local news. But this? This is the wrong response. Watch and/or listen as I explain why. youtu.be/Sw44rJS2TTw #C18 #BillC18 #onlinenews #Google #Facebook #SenateofCanada #SenCa #cdnpoli #yeg #Edmonton #EdmontonJournal

  19. Did you say paper straw … the one that Danielle Smith claims broke Alberta’s back?

I thought it was only Rex Murphy who couldn’t manage to negotiate something so horrendous as paper straws.

    Damn that Trudeau!

  20. @KathyReid Thank you. Thursday was always #PurpleShirtDay at the #EdmontonJournal, a tradition begun by my erstwhile colleague, @keithgerein. Lots of us have left the paper, but we try to keep up the custom, as an inside joke, and a reminder of our happy newsroom days together. (@jantafrench keeps us up to the mark.) #Edmonton #yeg #yegmedia
