Also had the Girvan 25 while I was there. A lot lighter and sweeter than I usually drink, but it was delicious and worked well with desert; might have paired slightly better with a lighter desert. #ECIR2024

With #ECIR2024 in Glasgow, of course I had to go whisky shopping. The Lagg is quite delicious, on the smoky/peaty side, but more smoked than smoke. Notes of bacon and smoked chili and maybe a hint of dried fruit.

Come and see the Radboud University posters at #ECIR2024: "Weighted AUReC: Handling Skew in Shard Map Quality Estimation for Selective Search" by Gijs Hendriksen and "Knowledge Transfer from Resource-Rich to Resource-Scarce Environments" by Negin Ghasemi.

Andrew Parry shows how to fool cross-encoder rankers by simply adding words like "true" and "relevant" to you documents; keyword stuffing that improves ranking your document for *every* query! (See: "Analyzing Adversarial Attacks on Sequence-to-Sequence Relevance Models" #ECIR2024)

#ECIR2024 peeps! Come check out our poster today on multiple comparisons for IR experiments (work led by my PhD grad Ngozi Ihemelandu). https://md.ekstrandom.net/pubs/ecir-mcp

Now have a recording of my keynote from yesterday's IR4U2 workshop #ECIR2024, along with something new: an edited transcript, for those who would prefer to read.
All of that here: https://md.ekstrandom.net/talks/2024/ir4u2

Really glad to see this analysis at #ECIR2024 for power consumption transparency. Program chairs estimate that ECIR experiments took 15MWh of GPU power.

@arjen Thanks!! Everybody says hi and they miss you!
I can recommend the train to Glasgow. Hopping on close to our house at Nijmegen Lent, station and hopping of at Glasgow Central just accross the street of the #ECIR2024 venue.12 hours door to door...
... except that Avanti West Coast cancelled the train from London to Glasgow .. -

In case anyone wonders, I did not review for #SIGIR2024 nor for #ECIR2024 this year.

On my way to #ECIR2024, currently chilling in YUL waiting for my flight. Looking forward to seeing folks in Glasgow! I'll be around all week, presenting a number of things. Details downthread 🙂.

Looks like about half the #ECIR2024 proceedings are online now, so the official version of our paper on consumer impacts (w/ Lex Beattie, Sole Pera, and Henriette Cramer) is now online! Get it here: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-56066-8_25
Paywall-free preprint: https://md.ekstrandom.net/pubs/ecir-impacts

Excited to be giving a keynote at the IR4U2 workshop at #ECIR2024! I'll be talking about _why_ we pursue IR for understudied users, and the difference those reasons make for the work itself. https://ir4u2workshop.wixsite.com/ir4u2/services-1

And the third #ECIR2024 preprint! Amifa Raj's dissertation work on fair reranking for grid-based search & #recsys layouts — going beyond the linear ranked lists that dominate fair ranking literature was a major effort in her Ph.D work. https://md.ekstrandom.net/pubs/ecir-fair-grids
-
Another #ECIR2024 preprint! Lex Beattie, Henriette Cramer, Sole Pera, and I map the space of goals and “intervention strategies” for consumer-side impacts of IR & #recsys (with application to other stakeholders too).
We argue that effective impact work needs to be well-grounded, contextualized in broad and creative thinking about possibilities, and use methods that are well-matched to the goals. TL;DR put down the regularizer and step away from the algorithm.

First of our #ECIR2024 preprints up — paper led by my (just graduated) student Ngozi Ihemelandu on multiple testing corrections for IR & #recsys evaluation: https://md.ekstrandom.net/pubs/ecir-mcp

As I mentioned earlier, we have 3 papers coming out in #ECIR2024 next spring. Preprints won't be available until early Jan, but here's a preview.
-
Our full paper has been accepted at #ecir2024 (IR 4 Good track). With Federico Cau. Title: Navigating the Thin Line: Examining User Behavior in Search to Detect Engagement and Backfire Effects. We present a preregistered user study (n = 257) investigating whether levels (low and high) of bias metrics and search results presentation (with or without AI-predicted stances labels) can affect the stance diversity consumption and search behavior of opinionated users
-
Details to come, but 3/3 papers accepted to #ECIR2024 (one short, two IR for Good).

The Deutsche Bahn (https://www.international-bahn.de/de/search) provides the best rail planner, if you ask me. Surprisingly, Nijmegen-Glasgow can be done in less than 11 hours. #ecir2024 (much faster than for instance Nijmegen-Ostrava -- to name some random European destination)
-
Already planning for #ecir2024 in Glasgow? Here's some carbon emission statistics from the man in seat 61 @seatsixtyone: "Cut CO2 emissions by 90% by taking the train instead of plane..."
-
ALERT: We are not here to only train our PhDs to rank/recommend advertisements and products for Big Tech. Good to see that the @ecir2024 organizers got that. Please contribute to the #ECIR2024 "Information Retrieval for Good track":
