From the little I read about Balkan politics, and the #EU ‘s *bête noire* ( #Orban ‘s successor in #Slovakia ) , it very much looks like #Fico is trash-talking #NATO in order to appease a sizeable pro-#Russian portion of his constituents. While this political expediency is, in all probability, keeping his party in govt, it does not please his #European partners and will likely come in for some form of financial penalties. Imo Fico is playing a risky game and will have to pay the price, eventually.

Robert Fico always seems to find an innovative way to put Slovakia in the international headlines for the wrong reasons. Most recently, he declared that he does not want Slovakia “to be part of some military conflict because of some Article 5”.

Mind you, Article 5 is the absolute foundation of the Nato alliance, because it states that an armed attack against one Nato member shall be considered an attack against them all.

What’s worse, Fico’s statements ruin Slovakia’s reputation, even though in reality the government is increasing its actual work with the allies. For example, Slovak pilots are preparing to join the Nato air policing mission with their brand-new F-16s by 2028.

Slovak soldiers have also been sent to Poland and Romania to take part in the Eastern Sentry operation.

What Robert Fico is doing is masking this involvement from his pro-Russian voters. But what makes it sad is that, by doing so, he is damaging the reputation of the whole country, along with the soldiers and pilots who are actually working to protect Nato from Russia.” (Source: [email protected] )
